There have been several rumors and speculations which indicate that Apple may launch an iPad with a larger 12.9-inch screen next year.

Taiwanese website, DigiTimes is reporting that Apple has given the order to Quanta Computer to make the larger iPad.

Chinese site United Daily News had also claimed that Apple was working with Quanta Computer on the larger iPad in September.

DigiTimes reports:

Quanta Computer has reportedly landed orders for Apple’s rumored large-size iPad for mass production in the second half of 2014, while Inventec, Quanta and Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) are currently competing over Apple’s iWatch orders, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. [..]

[..] Quanta is expected to encounter several challenges in terms of industrial design and assembly when making the large-size iPad. And since the size is not the mainstream specification, order volumes are expected to be limited, the sources said.

According to the report, Apple plans to target education and enterprise markets with the larger iPad. The report also notes that Apple is distributing its orders among several ODMs, and has recently given some of its iPad and iPhone orders to Compal Communications and Wistron.

Quanta Computers is an intriguing choice for the production of the larger iPad as it currently makes Apple’s current MacBook Airs, unless the larger iPad is actually going to be a cross between an iPad and MacBook Air.

I’m not really looking forward to a larger iPad as I prefer using the Retina iPad mini, but if it doubles up as a MacBook Air, then it’s going to make things very interesting. iPad Pro would be quiet an apt name for such a product, and probably the reason Apple called this year’s 9.7-inch iPad, iPad Air.

What do you think? Let me know your thoughts on the possibility of a larger iPad in the comments below.
