iPhone Dev Team Provides Details About Downgrading From iOS 6 to iOS 5.x

iOS 6 Jailbreak

iPhone Dev team has just published a post titled “Blob-o-riffic”, which provides details about downgrading from iOS 6 to iOS 5.x.x.

iPhone Dev team has warned that iPhone 4S, iPad 3 (and some iPad 2) users won’t be able to downgrade from iOS 6 to iOS 5.1.1 once Apple stops signing iOS 5.1.1 and will be stuck until a jailbreak for iOS 6 is released.

Dev team also noted that there are some serious deficiencies in the iOS 5.x.x restore process which are permanently exploitable in the iOS firmware file, which will allow users to re-restore their iOS device to iOS 5.x even after Apple stops signing the iOS 5.1.1 firmware. iPhone Dev team will be releasing a new version of Redsn0w that will include this new re-restore functionality.

The Dev team has listed down the scenarios for different iOS devices.

  1. A4 devices and 3GS will always be downgradable (and jailbreakable) due to limera1n.  The tethered iOS6 jailbreak for those devices (and untethered for old-bootrom 3GS) will be out when Cydia and other important pieces are all working properly
  2. iPad2 owners who have both 4.x blobs and 5.x blobs will always be able to downgrade to those versions, even once you come up to 6.0 and the 5.1.1 window closes (don’t do that yet though!).  You need both 4.x and 5.x blobs to qualify for the downgrade even if you only wish to downgrade to 5.x
  3. iPad3, i4S (and iPad2 owners who don’t satisfy #2) will always be able to RE-restore the current 5.x OS that’s already on their device.  So if you’re at 5.1.1 when the window closes (and you’ve saved your blobs), you’ll always be able to RE-restore to 5.1.1 again.  This makes the 5.1.1 jailbreak a lot less fragile — you don’t have to worry about messing up your install with funky extensions or getting into a boot loop, because you can always RE-restore from 5.1.1 to 5.1.1 again (or from 5.0.1 to 5.0.1 again, etc).  But once you fall off the 5.x train by restoring to 6.x, you’ll be stuck there until the next jailbreak.

It basically means that iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS users will able to downgrade if they have the SHSH blobs using Redsn0w. They will also release a new version of Redsn0w that allows them to jailbreak (tethered) iOS 6 once the issues with Cydia and modules like PreferenceLoader are fixed.

iPad 2 users will be able to downgrade to iOS 5.x only if they have both the iOS 4.x and iOS 5.x blobs.

iPad 3, iPhone 4S and iPad 2 (who don’t have iOS 4.x and iOS 5.x blobs) users who do not upgrade to iOS 6 will be able to re-restore to the current iOS 5.x firmware that is installed on their device. The ability to re-restore will make it a little less stressful to stay on jailbroken iOS 5.x.

iPhone Dev team hasn’t provided any further updates on iOS 6 jailbreak, we’ll let you know if we have any further updates.

So without wasting any time take a backup of SHSH blobs before Apple stops signing iOS 5.1.1. You can follow this guide to save the SHSH blobs using TinyUmbrella.

iPhone Dev Team Releases Redsn0w 0.9.15b1; Includes Support For Tethered iOS 6 Jailbreak, New iOS 5.x.x Restore Functionality

iPhone Dev team has just released Redsn0w 0.9.15b1, which includes a large number of features and improvements.

Redsn0w 0.9.15b1 finally adds native support for tethered iOS 6.0 jailbreak  and installs Cydia, so you don’t have to install it manually. It also includes the new iOS 5.x.x restore feature, that will allow iOS 5.x.x users to restore their devices to any iOS 5.x.x firmware if they’ve the appropriate SHSH blobs.

Here’s the list of new features and improvements in Redsn0w 0.9.15b1:

  • restore from any 5.x iOS to any other (up, down or the same) 5.x iOS on all devices as long as you have the correct blobs (see more below)
  • Cydia now included in the tethered 6.0 jailbreak on A4 devices
  • automatically “Just Boot” tethered when qualifying A4 device connects in DFU mode
  • untethered 6.0 jailbreak on old-bootrom 3GS
  • untethered 6.0 hactivation on any 3GS or iPhone4
  • directly restore pre-A5 devices to earlier firmware — no more complicated 15-step how-to’s with stitching, iTunes errors, and “hosts file” concerns
  • fetch new signed blobs for any IPSW (present or future — no redsn0w update required) using Extras->SHSH Blobs->New
  • block the BB update for any 3GS or iPhone4 restore (past, present, or future — no redsn0w update required) using Extras->Even More->Restore
  • deactivate any iPhone, useful for testing your “official” unlock status through iTunes.  (Please only deactivate your own iPhone!)
  • activation status shown on “Even more” page
  • significantly more (very nerdy) info returned by “Identify” button when device is in Normal mode
  • tethered jailbreak of ATV2 supported (but the only thing available for it is the SSH2 custom bundle available here — no Cydia yet.  Must use “Select IPSW” for tethered boot of ATV2 for now).
  • auto-exit WTF mode for older devices with broken buttons
  • any time a set of blobs is fetched remotely (from Apple or Cydia), redsn0w also saves them locally (and will check there first if you click “Local”)
  • for your future restoring convenience, you should also submit all of your past and present TinyUmbrella blobs to Cydia if you haven’t done so yet.  Resubmitting is okay and won’t cause conflicts.

Dev team has also provided the following details about the re-restore functionality:

1. redsn0w now lets you restore an A5+ device from any iOS5 to any other iOS5 as long as you have correct 5.x blobs for the starting (current) and ending points of the restore

  • APtickets eliminated “higher-version only” comparison of firmware restores (just like BBtickets did for the baseband)
  • example restores supported by redsn0w if you have the correct blobs: 5.1.1-to-5.0.1, 5.0.1-to-5.1.1, 5.1.1-to-5.1.1, 5.0.1-to-5.0.1
  • if you don’t have the blobs locally, let redsn0w try to fetch them remotely (redsn0w always tries both Apple and Cydia).  Any succesful remote fetch also saves a local copy too.

2. You DO NOT QUALIFY for iOS5-to-iOS5 restores if you got to your current 5.x via an OTA update

  • the tickets saved by Cydia, redsn0w, and TinyUmbrella do not cover OTA update ramdisk images
  • even if they did, it’s the “wrong kind” of ramdisk (you’d need to start at that earlier pre-OTA FW)
  • devices fresh from factory or refurb may fall in the “does not qualify” category (your results will vary)
  • it’s okay if you previously got to 5.x via an OTA update, as long as your current 5.x was installed via a normal iTunes restore.  All that matters is how you got to your current 5.x most recently
  • redsn0w detects an OTA/normal-restore APticket mismatch very early, so if you don’t know your status there should be no harm in trying.  Any device in recovery mode after such a mismatch can boot normally again just by going back to “Even More” screen from the “Restore” screen (or use “Recovery Fix” if you quit redsn0w before doing that).

3. Unlike the A4 devices, redsn0w can’t (usefully) prevent the baseband updates of A5+ iPhones and iPads.

  • and so, redsn0w automatically flashes the currently signed baseband when it does A5+ restores, even if those basebands didn’t come with the original firmware
  • stay away from this if you have an unofficial unlock that isn’t supported by the newest baseband
  • the least-tested baseband update code in redsn0w is for iPad2,3 and iPad3,2.  Please give any feedback on those iOS5 restores in the comments section below.

4. iPad2 owners (all three models) with saved 4.x blobs can use those instead, even from 6.x

  • if you have both 4.x and 5.x iPad2 blobs, you can always get to 5.x via the 4.x blobs, even if you’re currently on 6.x
  • you cannot get to 5.x from 6.x without the 4.x blobs (but you may still qualify for the iOS5-to-iOS5 restore described above)
  • if somehow you have 4.x blobs but no 5.x blobs, you can still go down to 4.x from 6.x
  • this only applies to iPad2 owners (they’re the only A5+ devices that ever had a public 4.x FW)
  • redsn0w still supports (but doesn’t require) jailbreaking A5+ devices at 5.0.1 and 5.1.1.  Just head back to the first page after re-restoring to 5.x.  It’s always much faster to jailbreak those FW versions with a freshly-restored device, before letting iTunes restore from a saved userland backup.

And finally, some random details:

5. ultrasn0w isn’t yet updated for 6.x

  • by now you probably should be taking advantage of the extremely cheap IMEI-based unlocks of iPhones sold by established online retailers like http:://cutyoursim.com
  • still, IMEI-based unlocks don’t work in all cases.  We’ll announce when ultrasn0w is ported up to 6.x
  • redsn0w will still hactivate your 3GS or iPhone4 if you run it before the device is activated.  Due to the current tethered 6.x JB status, redsn0w now hactivates 6.x without requiring subsequent tethered boots.  If you accidentally hactivate with redsn0w, use the “Deactivate” checkbox available from the Jailbreak screen, not the normal one in “Even more”

6. As always, redsn0w lets you “Fetch” the SHSH blobs currently flashed onto your pre-A5 device

  • use this if you’re at 5.x or 4.x but without having saved your blobs when the window was open
  • this is only useful when Apple is no longer signing the firmware, otherwise Cydia/redsn0w “New”/TinyUmbrella blobs are superior (but you’re welcome to fetch your 6.0 blobs this way anyway)
  • fetching blobs in this fashion will automatically forward them up to Cydia, as well as save a local copy

iPhone Dev team hasn’t provided any details about the untethered iOS 6.0 jailbreak or jailbreak for newer iOS devices like iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5G.

That’s a lot of information to process, but don’t worry, we’ll post how-to tutorials shortly to show you how to use the new features, so stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or subscribe to our RSS feed.

iPhone Dev Team Releases Redsn0w 0.9.15b2; Includes Some Bug Fixes

Redsn0w

Over the weekend, iPhone Dev team had released a major update for Redsn0w that made it a lot easier to jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 4G and also came with the new re-restore functionality.

iPhone Dev team has now released an update for Redsn0w that includes some bug fixes for iPhone 3GS users.

Here’s what’s new in Redsn0w 0.9.15b2:

Version 0.9.15b2 fixes a few issues for 3GS owners: old-bootrom awesomeness is no longer forgotten directly after a restore, and iPad baseband upgrade/downgrade support is fixed (same production date cutoffs apply!).  If your 3GS is currently tethered at 6.0 even though you have an old bootrom, just re-run redsn0w’s Jailbreak step (no need to restore).  Don’t forget you can add some pizzaz with your own boot logo or a nerdy verbose boot.

So iPhone 3GS users with the older bootrom so re-run the jailbreak step if their jailbreak is tethered, so that they can enjoy the untethered jailbreak.

You can check out this post for more details about the re-restore functionality.

You can download Redsn0w 0.9.15 beta 2 from this link.

How To Downgrade iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4G From iOS 6 Using Redsn0w

Redsn0w

iPhone Dev team released a new version of Redsn0w over the weekend, which makes it a lot easier to downgrade pre-A5 devices such as iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 2G from iOS 6.0 to iOS 5.x.x using the direct restore option.

In this guide, we show you how to downgrade your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or iPod touch 4G from iOS 6.0 to iOS 5.x.x using Redsn0w.

Some important points before we proceed:

  • This guide is meant for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 4G users. It is currently not possible to downgrade the newer iOS devices such as iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3. You can find out more details here.
  • This method will work only if you’ve saved your SHSH blobs for iOS 5.x.x either using TinyUmbrella or had jailbroken your iPhone when it was running iOS 5.x.x and launched Cydia at least once, which would have cached the SHSH blobs on its servers.
  • Since the method restores your iPhone with iOS 5.x.x, you need to go through the process of setting up your iPhone from the backup, which can take sometime.
  • Please note that when you restore from backup, you will only see only iOS 5.x.x or lower compatible backups.

Here are the step-by-step instructions to downgrade your iOS device using Redsn0w:

Step 1: Download RedSn0w 0.9.15b3 (RedSn0w 0.9.15 beta 3) from this link.

Step 2: Download iOS 5.x.x firmware file for your iPhone 4/iPhone 3GS from this link or for iPod touch 4g from this link.

Step 3: Turn off your iOS device and connect it your computer.

Step 4: You will now need to put your iOS device into the DFU mode. You can follow these simple steps to put your iPhone in DFU mode:

(a) Hold the Power button on iOS device down for 3 seconds:

(b) Now simultaneously hold the Home button and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds:

(c) Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until your device’s screen goes black or iTunes pops up a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

Step 5: Double click the Redsn0w zip file and extract the application to the Redsn0w folder. Navigate back to the Redsn0w folder and launch the Redsn0w application. Please ensure that you have launched the latest version of Redsn0w.

Windows 7 users should run the exe in Windows XP compatibility mode (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select Properties, then select the Compatibility tab and select Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP). Windows XP and Windows 7 users should run Redsn0w as ‘Administrator’ (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select ‘Run as an Administrator’).

Step 6: Redsnow will report that your iOS device is connected in DFU mode (For example: Connected: iPhone 4 (DFU mode)). Click on the Extras button, then click on SHSH blobs  button, followed by the Stitch button.

Step 7: Click on the IPSW button, here browse to the location you had downloaded the iOS firmware file and select the .ipsw file.

Step 8: In the next step, you need to retrieve the SHSH blobs for the downgrade process. If you’ve them stored locally then click on the Local button or click on the Cydia button, if you want Redsn0w to download them from Cydia. If you had jailbroken your iOS device while it was running iOS 5.x.x and launched Cydia at least once then it would have cached the SHSH blobs on the server. Redsn0w will show the progress bar as it Fetching blobs from the server.

That’s it, your iOS device should successfully restore to iOS 5.x.x.

Note: If you get “Couldn’t restore Mismatched APTicket” during the restore process then don’t panic, simply repeat step 4 to 7 and the restore should work successfully this time.

If you’ve any problem downgrading then check out this video tutorial:

You’re all set to jailbreak your iOS device again. If you need help then check our How to Jailbreak page for the link to our latest guide to jailbreak your iOS device on iOS 5.1.1.

How To Use Redsn0w’s Identify Feature To See Nerdy Info About Your iOS Device

Redsn0w

Few days back, iPhone Dev team had released a major update for Redsn0w that made it a lot easier to jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 4G and also came with the new re-restore functionality.

Redsn0w 0.9.15 beta also came with an improved version of the Identify feature, which as iPhone Dev team had revealed in the release notes, returns “significantly more (very nerdy) info” without jailbreaking your iOS device.

The cool thing is that now you don’t need to put your iOS device in DFU mode to get the information of your device, so users who don’t care about jailbreaking can also run Redsn0w to access this information. You

All you need to do is follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Download the latest version of RedSn0w from this link.

Step 2: Double click the Redsn0w zip file and extract the application to the Redsn0w folder. Navigate to the Redsn0w folder.

Step 3:  Click on the Extras button.

Step 4: Then click on the Even More button.

Step 5: And then click by the Identify button.

  • ActivationInfo:
  • ActivationPublicKey:
  • ActiveWirelessTechnology:
  • ActivityURL:
  • AirplaneMode:
  • ApNonce:

Step 5: Go back to Redsn0w’s main page and click on the Jailbreak button.

Step 6: Redsn0w will now start preparing the jailbreak data.

Step 7: You will now be prompted to select the jailbreak options. Make sure Cydia is selected and click on the Next button to continue. iPhone 3GS users can also select Enable battery percentage option.

Step 8: You will now need to prompted to put your iOS device into the DFU mode. Redsn0w will take you through the necessary steps:

(a) Hold the Power button on your iOS device down for 3 seconds:

(b) Now simultaneously hold the Home button and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds:

(c) Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until Redsn0w detects the device:

Step 9: Your iOS device should reboot now. Please remember to release the Home button.

Step 10: Your iOS device will reboot again and Redsn0w will now begin uploading the new RAM disk and kernel.

Step 11: You will be notified once the jailbreaking process is complete. Click on the Ok and then Quit button to exit the application.

Step 12: The rest of the process will take place on your iOS device, wait for it to complete. Your iOS device will reboot once again (which could take approximately 5 minutes). You will now see the Home screen on your iOS device, but Cydia would still be missing, that’s because you still need to tether boot your iOS device using Redsn0w. So follow the steps mentioned below.

Boot tethered:

Step 13: Launch Redsn0w again.

Step 14: Click on Extras button.

Step 15: Then click on the Select IPSW button. Navigate and select the firmware file downloaded in Step 2.

Step 16: Then click on the Just Boot button.

Step 17: You will now be prompted to plug your iOS device to the computer and switch it OFF again. Follow the instructions and click on the Next button to move to the next screen:

Step 18: You will now need to put your iOS device into the DFU mode.

Step 19: Redsn0w will recognize the iOS device in DFU mode and apply the limerain exploit (remember to release the Home button). Your iOS device will reboot and a pineapple logo will appear, indicating a tethered boot.

Step 20: Wait for the process to complete, once it is complete, you should see the Lock screen on your iOS device.

That’s it, your iOS device has now been successfully jailbroken and you should see Cydia on the Home screen. If you don’t find it on the Home screen, please don’t panic, search for it using Spotlight.

Note: Since Redsn0w currently supports only a tethered jailbreak except for iPhone 3GS with older bootrom, you will need to follow steps 13 to Steps 20, each time you reboot your iPhone or iPod touch to be able to use the jailbreak apps like Cydia.
