iOS certainly has a leg up on Android in the software update department. While only 1.1% of Android users are on the latest version of Android 4.4 KitKat, a whopping 74% of iOS users are running iOS 7.

This latest metric is as reliable as it comes since it is pulled directly from Apple. Similar to the Android developer dashboard, Apple has an App Store Distribution page that reveals the iOS version breakdown. Measurements taken during a 7‑day period ending December 1, 2013 reveal that 74% of iPhone and iPad owners have installed iOS 7, while 22% still have iOS 6 on their devices. A small percentage (4%) are running a version earlier than iOS 6.

One reason for this widespread adoption is Apple’s support of older devices. iOS 7 can be installed on all iPhone models from the iPhone 4 and newer and all iPad models except the original iPad. Also, iOS updates are delivered to everyone at the same time regardless of country and carrier. This is much different from Android which must pass through manufacturers and carriers before landing on customer’s devices. Are you running iOS 7 on your iPhone and iPad? Or are you still on an older version?
