apptivity_seat

When it comes to kids and technology, there is a growing controversy over how much screen time is too much. This topic gets even more divisive when it comes to infants, which is why the Apptivity bouncy seat from Fisher Price is causing such a stir.

The Apptivity is a bouncy seat for newborns. It’s jut like any good bouncy seat with a comfortable reclining hammock for the baby to relax in and a strap to keep the little one safe. What’s missing from this model is the toy bar with its dangling, colorful toys. Instead of a rack of toys, babies can be treated to a some educational apps thanks to an iPad mount that’s positioned in the middle of the baby’s field of view.

Not surprisingly, not everyone is pleased with this design choice. Josh Golin, associate director for the Boston-based Campaign for a Commercial-free Childhood, calls the Apptivity bouncer “the ultimate baby sitter” and admonishes Fisher Price for marketing the bouncer as “educational” for newborns when no such evidence exists that these devices are beneficial to newborn. Golin argues that babies need laps, not apps when they are very young. So what do you think? Does the Apptivity bouncer go too far?
