New Apple job listings hints at Public Transit directions coming to Maps app

maps ios 7 app

Apple has posted two new job postings, which reveals that the company continues to expand its Maps team to integrate public transit directions into its Maps app.

Apple is currently looking for a Maps Public Transit Engineering Manager and a Public Transit Software Engineer.

Here’s the job description from one of the job listing:

As a member of the Transit Routing team, you will work on one of the most anticipated features of Apple Maps. You will design and implement functionality that will be used by millions of users worldwide. Being part of a small team, you will have an influence on the future product. You will be responsible for implementing new features and resolving complex issues.

Apple’s Maps app that was launched last year to replace Google Maps, lacks public transit directions, and instead directs users to third-party apps for it.

Apple has recently acquired HopStop and Embark, two mapping companies that offered apps in the App Store that provided detailed subway, bus, train, taxi, walking and biking directions, which had suggested that Apple plans to integrate the public transit directions into its Maps app rather than directing users to third-party apps. The new job listings confirms it.

It remains to be seen when Apple will integrate the public transit directions into its Maps app. I was expecting it in iOS 7, but the Maps app only received a minor update.
