The Korea Herald reports that LG Display is close to signing a deal with Apple to supply OLED displays for its rumored iWatch product.

The report also claims that in addition LG Display, RITEK subsidary RiTdisplay will also be supply OLED displays for the smartwatch.

Samsung apparently met with Apple to supply OLED displays for the iWatch, but the discussion between the two companies have not been productive so far.

Instead of relying on one supplier for its iWatch, which will be unveiled next year, Apple will have two vendors to be safe. The key provider will be RiTDisplay and LG Display will be the second,” Seoul-based HMC Investment Securities’ analyst Kim Young-woo said. “Japan Display might also be a candidate, but so far its capacity seems lacking.”

There have been several rumors and speculations, which suggest that Apple is planning to launch the iWatch smartwatch in 2014. According to a rumor back in May, Apple has been testing an iWatch model with 1.5-inch OLED screen.

Tim Cook recently said wearable tech was an area of ‘profound’ interest for the company. Apple has also been busy filing trademark for the “iWatch” name in several countries, which indicates that it is gearing up to launch a smartwatch. Apple has also been hiring aggressively for the iWatch project, and it looks like health and fitness tracking will be one of the major features of the device.

Yesterday, during the fourth quarter earnings call, Tim Cook confirmed that Apple will unveil new product categories within 2014.
