How a bunch of Israeli intelligence officers inspired the flat design of iOS 7

ios-7-logo

Many people are familiar with list-making app Any.do. It was one of the first apps to ditch the skeuomorphic look of most productivity apps and opted for a simple, clear design. What most people don’t know is how the Israeli military and Jony Ive were involved in the app. A recent post by The Verge connects these dots in a surprising way.

According to The Verge, Any.do founder Omer Perchik did a short stint in the Israeli military and called upon his Israeli Defense Force buddies to build a team with some of the best and brightest intelligence officers. This group would develop Perchik’s dream to-do app.

Unlike most to-do apps which adopted a daily planner look and feel, Any.do broke that model with a simple, but powerful flat, minimilist design that took the focus away from how an app looks to you to how it works with you. It debuted first on Android and then landed on iOS in June 2012. Collectively, the Android and iOS app has been downloaded over 7 million times.

Any.do’s UI was so good that it caught the eye of Jony Ive and his team of talented designers at Apple. According to people familiar with the matter, Any.do was one of several apps that Apple considered when it designed iOS 7. Apple has never commented on the matter , but its design ethos of iOS 7 echoes that of Any.do — “In taking away design elements that don’t add value, suddenly there’s greater focus on what matters most: your content.”

You can read more about the origins of Any.do and its influence on iOS 7 in the article at The Verge. You can also check out Any.do — it’s available for free in the iOS App Store.

See the evolution of iOS 7 with these images

Apple seeded iOS 7.1 beta 3, and to everyone’s surprise it has made some more cosmetic changes to the user interface in some native apps, especially the Phone app.

The most striking change is in the Phone app, the flat rectangular buttons making way for circular buttons and the return of the slider button, but this time with a knob.

Sentry, UI Designer behind popular tweaks such as Auxo shared a set of images which shows the design evolution of the Phone app in iOS 7. He tweeted:

Evolution of iOS 7 (beta—.0—.1)

Notice how visual affordances, iconography & button shapes inched their way back in…

ios-7-evolution

The change hasn’t gone down too well with some users who feel that Apple has managed to make something bad look worse.

Personally, I prefer the skeuomorphic design as long as you don’t go overboard with it, I like the buttons to look like buttons rather than just text or borderless buttons as I find them a lot less intuitive. So I’m glad to see that Apple is rethinking the “flat” design language, and making appropriate changes. Though I must say I’m not a big fan of the colorful sliders. They look hideous.

What about you? Do you like the upcoming changes in iOS 7.1? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Is iOS 7 crashing on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch?

ios-7-logo

It’s been four months since iOS 7, Apple’s next-generation mobile operating system, was released, and design criticisms aside, a number of people have complained about the frequent crashes they’ve been facing.

The reason for the crashes are of course a tight release schedule that might not have eliminated all iOS bugs, thus resulting in the overall instability. iOS 7 also adds support for 64-bit A7 chips, used in the iPhone 5s, iPad Air and iPad mini, which could also be a reason for crashes.

Apple has released 4 iOS software updates to fix stability issues since the September release of iOS 7. These updates did reduce the frequency of crashes, but haven’t been able to squash all the bugs, as per user reports. iOS 7 on an iPad is said to be even more unstable, possibly because Apple started work on iOS 7 on the iPad late.

While you can’t do much if the OS is causing crashes, you could try to diagnose the exact cause by having a look at the crash logs iOS stores in Settings > General > About > Diagnostics & Usage > Diagnostics & Usage Data.

So are you facing issues on iOS 7.0.4 on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch? Apple is rumored to hold out iOS 7.1 until March, hopefully to refine the OS further, squash the bugs and eliminate the crashes.

Leaked screenshots show how iOS in the Car’s interface looks like

iOS in the Car is an upcoming iOS feature, which lets you access your Maps, messages, and other services on your car’s touchscreen console, so that you won’t have to take your eyes off the wheel.

While we had gotten sneak peaks at some of the functionalities of iOS in the Car through hidden settings, developer Steven Troughton-Smith today managed to actually run the system, and posted its screenshots.

Here’s the home screen:

According to previous reports, an iOS device will use the car’s touchscreen system wirelessly via AirPlay, or over USB.

iOS in the Car will reportedly be fully available with iOS 7.1, and new cars from Honda, Mercedes, Nissan, Ferrari etc. are expected to support the feature by this year. Tim Cook had said that the feature will be an important part of Apple’s ecosystem.

ColorFlow vs. Colorize: Side-by-Side Comparison [Video]

coverflow-colorize-1

If you like jailbreak tweaks like Fancy, that allows you to change the color of iOS 7′s user interface then you will like Colorize and ColorFlow.

The two jailbreak tweaks offer similar functionality. They change the background color of the Music app based on the album art work.

There is a subtle difference between the two tweaks, so we’ve done a side-by-side comparison to give a closer look.

coverflow-colorize-2

Here’s a video walkthrough of Coverflow jailbreak tweak:

And a video walkthrough of Colorize along with the side-by-side comparison:

Personally I prefer Colorflow, as the text, the carrier and status symbols seem to stand out a lot more in the Music app, compared to Colorize.

However, Colorflow will set you back by $1.99, whereas Colorize is available for only $0.99. If you’re looking for a free jailbreak tweak that customizes Music app’s UI, check out BlurredMusicApp.

Let me know which one you prefer in the comments below.

Evidence of new Apple TV hardware found in iOS 7

appletv9313

Apple is rumored to soon update the Apple TV lineup with an updated version, and evidence of this new hardware has been found in a public iOS 7 build.

Specifically, references of the next-generation Apple TV appeared in an AirPlay related file in the form of “AppleTV4,1.” The current generation Apple TV is internally referred to as “AppleTV3,2,” the model introduced in 2012 is referred to as “AppleTV3,1” and “AppleTV2,1” refers to the model released in 2010.

apple tv 4 1

A bump from 3 to 4 indicates a major refresh, in line with previous rumors that claimed the new Apple TV would have a “revamped OS” capable of running its own apps and games. Current builds of iOS 7 for the Apple TV in fact include references to the Game Controller framework, but it’s not clear if these are remnants from other iOS devices, or an indication of support for MFi Game Controllers.

While the reference to “AppleTV4,1” confirms that the next-generation Apple TV is in development, there’s no indication of when it’ll be released. A report from January claims that the update could come as soon as next month.

Senate bill to require a kill switch in mobile phones

ios-7-activation-lock-112013Four Democratic senators on Thursday proposed a bill that would require cell phones makers to include a kill switch to deactivate a device if stolen. This piece of legislation follows closely on the heels of a similar bill that was introduced in the state of California.

The federal Smartphone Theft Prevention Act would require every cell phone in the US to include a kill switch that was installed on the phone free of charge to the consumer. The technology would allow the consumer to wipe the data on their phone, render the phone inoperable to everyone except the original owner and prevent it from being activated on another network. These measures are meant to curb smartphone theft, which is on the rise in US metropolitan areas.

“It has been very troubling to see the rise in smartphone thefts across the nation, particularly since these crimes can be violent,” Senator Hirono said. “The Smartphone Theft Prevention Act would protect consumers by ensuring U.S. smartphones have an emergency ‘kill switch’ to keep thieves from operating stolen phones and accessing private information. By making this function widely available to mobile phone users, hopefully we will be able to deter thieves and prevent serious crimes.”

The cellular industry trade group CTIA has been opposed to earlier mandatory kill switch legislation, pointing out the possibility that malware could activate the switch and hold a phone hostage. In lieu of a kill switch, CTIA, along with the wireless carriers, created a database of stolen phones that is available to government and law enforcement agencies.

Apple added Activation Lock, a software kill switch, in iOS 7. This feature is turned on automatically when you set up Find My iPhone and makes it difficult for anyone use your iPhone or iPad if its been lost or stolen. Activation lock requires a person to enter the Apple ID and password of a phone before they can turn off Find My iPhone, sign out of iCloud or erase and reactivate a device. Activation Lock is optional, though, and not mandatory as this bill would require if it becomes law.

Redditor’s Top 10 reasons to Jailbreak iOS 7; What are yours?

ios-7-jailbreak

It has been just over three weeks since evad3rs released evasi0n7, the much awaited jailbreak for iOS 7.

Since then Cydia developers have been working hard to release updated version of the their tweaks to add support for iOS 7 and 64-bit A7 devices like the iPhone 5s, iPad Air and Retina iPad mini.

While we’re still waiting for some of our favorite tweaks such as Zephyr, Springtomize 3 to be released for iOS 7 and iPhone 5s, a majority of them are now compatible with iOS 7 and iPhone 5s. We’ve also seen quite a few new tweaks that have enhanced the functionality of features like Control Center.

So it is a good time to take a look at the top reasons to jailbreak iOS 7. Redditor, textredditor, has given the following reasons for jailbreaking iOS 7:

1. Activator:

Activator is an awesome jailbreak tweak by Ryan Petrich that you probably already know about. For those who’re new to jailbreaking, Activator lets you assign various actions that get called when a certain event, selected by you, occurs. The trigger can be a gesture, a tap on a specific area, the press of a button, a change of charging state or a bunch of other options. The “actions” list is equally diverse, letting you launch apps, toggle settings and is extensible via tweaks on Cydia.

Petrich has added more functionality to Activator for iPhone 5s users by allowing users to use Touch ID for any activator action.

2. BlurPaper:

The jailbreak tweak blurs the Home screen and Lock screen wallpaper. You need to add the following repo to Cydia http://repo.pnre.co.vu to install the tweak.

l2IdJ3C

3. Flux

We’ve all been there – a notification arrives on your iPhone late at night, and the screen brightness nearly blinds you for the first few seconds after unlocking. F.lux aims to solve exactly this problem by adjusting the color of your iPhone’s display to better adapt to the time of the day.

4. FlipControlCenter

FlipControlCenter was one of the first jailbreak tweaks for Control Center. It lets you customize and add more toggles to Control Center. Check this post for more details.

5. CCHide

CCHide allows you to hide various sections of Control Center. It also allows you to hide playback controls in Control Center when music is not playing. Jailbreak tweaks such as CCQuick Pro and Cloaky that offer similar functionality and more.

3s1EeB6

6. IconTool

IconTool is a useful jailbreak tweak that lets you backup and restore app data, rename icons, clear badges and more.

6BQoJI6

7. iFile

iFile is a full-blown file manager for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, which comes with tons of features such as compressing, deleting, viewing, copying, moving, renaming files and much more.

WOreLzX

8. Messages Customiser

Messages Customiser as the name suggests lets you customize almost every aspect of the Messages app in iOS 7 such as change the color of the message bubbles, enable Contact photos and lots more.

oVowYGn

9. SwipeSelection

SwipeSelection brings a cool new way to edit text in iOS using gestures.

qs9I3Mr

10. VideoPane

VideoPane, developed by Ryan Petrich, is an awesome tweak that allows you to detach a video from most video players and bring it straight to your Springboard.  You’re then able to navigate your iPhone or iPad by opening and closing apps while the video still plays on top. It looks even better in iOS 7.

zv6xqCJ

If you’re wondering how he has tweaked the appearance of the Home screen, then here’s the list of tweaks and themes:

  • Winterboard
  • M’flat iOS 7 Winterboard theme – Head over to this link for the installation instructions.
  • The Circular Connectivity Indicators tweak gives you the circular status indicators. You need to add the following repo to Cydia http://pi.kartikye.me/repo to install the tweak.
  • The name of the jailbreak tweak that makes the icons circular is Kiki, which can be installed from the following repo: http://pi.kartikye.me/repo (same as the previous one).
  • HomeScreenDesigner was used to create the 3×4 layout. You can apply 3×4 Textredditor 2014 layout in the Uploaded tab.
  • Cloaky was used to hide certain items in the Status bar.
  • Home screen Wallpaper – link
  • TransparentDock was used to remove blurred background from the iOS 7 dock.

These are some really cool reasons to jailbreak iOS 7, and I loved the way he has created gifs to show the functionality. Don’t forget to go to reddit, and vote for this awesome post.

Let me know what are your top reasons to jailbreak iOS 7.

Fix for Status Bar issues after jailbreaking iOS 7

status-bar-issue

Have you noticed an issue with the Status bar after jailbreaking iOS 7? You’re not alone.

A number of users have noticed that either the status bar shows up when it shouldn’t like when you’re seeing photos in the Photos app in full-screen mode, or it disappears when it should be visible such as the Stocks apps or the Phone app, or it just shows up in the wrong color.

If it has been annoying you then there is a now a tweak called StatusBarFix2 that can fix the issue.

The developer of the tweak, who goes by the handle pNre says that the bug is caused by Cydia moving system apps when it is launch for the first time. This is done to allow users to install third-party apps without the risk of filling up the root partition.

Here’s how to fix the issue. You will first need to add the pNre repo (http://repo.pnre.co.vu/) to Cydia to install the tweak. If you need help follow these instructions:

  • Launch Cydia
  • Tap on Manages tab, then tap on Sources
  • Then tap on Edit in the top right corner, followed by Add.
  • Enter the following: repo.pnre.co.vu after http://
  • Then tap on the Add Sources button.
  • Tap on the Return to Cydia button when prompted.
  • You should now see the pNre repo in the list of Sources. Tap on it, then tap on StatusBarFix2.
  • Then tap on the Install, followed by Confirm.
  • Tap on the Restart SpringBoard button when prompted.

That’s it. This should fix most of the Status bar issues. If the issue is still not fixed in some apps, then you may need to use Terminal (Mac) or an SSH client (Windows) and ssh into your device. Here are the instructions:

  • Open the app in which you’re still facing the problem e.g. Stocks
  • Connect to your iOS device via SSH (check out the video below if you need help).
  • Run the following command in Terminal: killall -9 Stocks (you need to replace Stocks with the name of the app with which you’re facing the issue)
  • This will close the Stocks app

However, when you launch it again, the Status bar issue should be fixed.

Check out our detailed video walkthrough of how to fix the issue if you’re having any problems following the above instructions:

evasi0n7 Jailbreak works with iOS 7.0.5

ios-7-0-5-logo

Apple released iOS 7.0.5 earlier today to correct networking provisioning for some iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models sold in China.

If you got the update and accidentally updated to it, then the good news is that iOS 7.0.5 can still be jailbroken using evasi0n7.

Security researcher, i0nic has just tweeted a screenshot of Cydia running on his iPhone 5s running iOS 7.0.5, and has confirmed that evasi0n7 still works with iOS 7.0.5.

cydia-ios-7-0-5

This means that Apple hasn’t fixed the exploits used by evasi0n7 in iOS 7.0.5, which is not surprising as it is just a minor update. Please note that the current version of evasi0n7 won’t work as it supports up to iOS 7.0.4, however evad3rs will be able to add support for iOS 7.0.5 with a small change.

There are quite a few unofficial versions of evasi0n7 that allow you jailbreak iOS 7.0.5, however we would recommend waiting for evasi0n7 team to release the official version.

As always, we’ll let you know when the evasi0n7 for iOS 7.0.5 is released, so stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or join our Facebook Fan page, follow us on Twitter, add us to your circles on Google+ or subscribe to our RSS feed.

SemiRestore will be updated to support iOS 7, will use OpenSSH instead of AFC2

SemiRestore

As you’ve probably heard by now, evasi0n jailbreak won’t work with the upcoming iOS 7.1 software update as Apple has patched a number of vulnerabilities used in evasi0n, so jailbreakers have been advised to avoid upgrading to it.

If you’re a jailbreaker who is nervous about the imminent launch of iOS 7.1, then we’ve some good news for you.

CoolStar, the developer of SemiRestore has just indicated that he is working on an update for his tool for iOS 7.

SemiRestore was first released for iOS 6.x. It is a nifty tool that allows users to restore their jailbroken iOS device to near stock condition without losing the jailbreak.

SemiRestore can come in handy when you get into a reboot loop issue because of a problematic/buggy tweak, which can usually force you to restore your device, that would also mean losing the jailbreak. Since it removes the jailbreak tweaks during the restore process, it can help in such cases.

CoolStar has tweeted that he plans to use OpenSSH for the iOS 7.0 version instead of AFC2*, which was used for iOS 6.x.

I looks like the developer is planning to use OpenSSH based on saurik’s suggestion, who has been advocating the use of OpenSSH over AFC2.

So it may be a good idea to install OpenSSH on your jailbroken iOS device, so that you have the option to restore to near stock condition when SemiRestore for iOS 7 is released and recover from a situation where a tweak brin. Please note that you should change the password after installing OpenSSH to change the root password of your jailbroken iOS device to prevent someone from remotely accessing your iOS device. You can check our guide if you need help.

CoolStar hasn’t provided any details on when it will be released. As always, we’ll let you know as soon as there are any further updates, so stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or join our Facebook Fan page, follow us on Twitter, add us to your circles on Google+ or subscribe to our RSS feed.

*AFC – Apple File Connection is a service that runs on every iPhone / iPod, which iTunes uses to exchange files with the device. AFC2 is a an additional AFC service, configured to allow access to the whole filesystem. (via iPhone wiki)

Cydia app for jailbroken devices updated with iOS 7 look and feel

cydia1
Jailbreaking may be for those who want the freedom to step outside of what Apple has decided iOS devices should do, but even jailbreakers are not immune to the influence of the company’s design guidelines, it seems.

The Cydia app, which allows users of jailbroken iPhones and iPads to install software not available on the App Store, has been updated with a flat look, bright colors and translucent overlays in line with iOS 7. This follows the surprise release of an iOS 7-compatible untethered jailbreak by the Evasi0n team.

There’s perhaps a small amount of rebellion in the fact that the app’s icon has not yet been updated to an iOS 7 look.

A thank-you for help with the new look was tweeted by @saurik. Video of the new app below the break …

Owners of the original iPad and 4th-gen iPod Touches can also get in on the action after a follow-up jailbreak for those on iOS 6.1.3 to 6.1.5

Thanks, Rachel, for the screengrabs

Apple posts slide decks and videos from 2013 iOS 7 Tech Talks

tech-talks-videos

As noted by 9to5Mac, Apple has posted content from its iOS 7 tech talks that were held in the past few months. Developers can access both slide decks and videos from the sessions, which focused on app and game development topics.

The Tech Talks are an extension of the development sessions held at WWDC. They are organized at various locations around the world and feature one-on-one help from Apple experts. Because they are smaller affairs, the labs are meant for developers to get detailed guidance as well as learn some handy tips and tricks. The Tech Talks started in October and ended December 18th. Now that the series for 2013 is completed, Apple has posted up the content from the talks as promised.

You’ll need a developers account to view or download the PDF slide decks and HD or SD versions of the videos from Apple’s Developer website.

Cydia gets iOS 7 makeover [Video]

When evad3rs released the evasi0n7 jailbreak, it caught even Jay Freeman aka saurik, the creator of Cydia by surprise.

It however didn’t take him much time as he has just released a major upgrade for Cydia to give it an iOS 7 makeover.

As you can see, Cydia 1.1.9 now sports a user interface with the white background and flatter design. The Cydia icon doesn’t seem to be updated, however the icons used in the app for the packages etc has been updated.

When you launch Cydia, you should ideally get a prompt informing you to install the upgrade, tap on the “Complete Upgrade” to install the new version of Cydia.

If you don’t get the upgrade dialogue box as seen below, then tap on the Changes tab, and then the Refresh button at the top left corner to refresh the package list. You should ideally get the prompt and also see Cydia Installer 1.1.9 when you search for it in the Search tab. You can also try killing Cydia running in the background, and relaunching it to see it helps.

Rumor: Chinese evasi0n7 jailbreak installs pirated app store, pushes Cydia to the side

ios7chinese

There’s a storm brewing over the recent iOS 7 jailbreak released by the evad3rs earlier today. Not only was Saurik (Jay Freeman) of Cydia fame not involved in the release of the jailbreak, there are also rumors that the Chinese version of the jailbreak features a Chinese app market instead of the well-known Cydia app repository. An unsubstantiated claims alleges that the evad3rs received a 3- or 4-figure sum to promote this pirated app store from Taig.

These allegations come from none other than Stefan Esser (@i0n1c), who has long been critical of recent jailbreak efforts. @i0n1c claims the evad3rs team received a substantial payoff from the Chinese firm to include a pirated market app in the jailbreak instead of Cydia. Esser himself claims he received a similar offer via an email, but turned it down and has long since deleted the email. Noted iOS developer and unlocker Will Strafach (@chronic) also says he and others were offered more than $150,000. This doesn’t confirm the evad3rs received a payoff, but it does open the door for that possibility.

Cydia is supposedly available in the Chinese iOS 7 jailbreak, but it is a secondary option, with some users reporting that the app does not work. Taig, the company behind the Chinese market app, is supposedly boasting about how MobileSubstrate is broken, but its own market library is working. Don’t believe it? You supposedly can try it for yourself as anyone can install this Chinese version by switching the language on their computer to Simplified Chinese.

You can check out the discussion about this Chinese app store on Y-Combinator’s Hacker News and browse through these tweets embedded below. Judge for yourself whether these accusations are true. For his part, evad3r member Pod2G doesn’t deny nor confirm that there is a a collaboration with TaiG, but he does express surprise that it may contain pirated apps.

Updates: The evad3rs confirmed in a post that the team rushed out the jailbreak to beat a competing team that was close to a launch. It did not include Saurik in its launch as he was working with this other group. The evad3rs also confirmed that partnered with the Chinese app store Taig, but the inclusion of pirated apps was not part of the deal. Pod2g confirmed that the team has decided to remotely disable the installation of Taig until further notice.

  • Rebooting device

Please wait patiently while the jailbreaking process is running, don’t start iTunes or Xcode in the meanwhile.

Step 7: Once your iPad has rebooted, you will get a message informing you to unlock your iPad. Do not close the evasi0n application.

Step 8: Unlock your iPad and then tap on the evasi0n 7 app (the one with the evasi0n 7 icon).

Step 9: When you launch the evasi0n app, the screen will go white and your iPad will reboot again.

Step 10: The rest of the jailbreak process will now take place on your iPad. After you iPad reboots, you will see a large evasi0n logo with messages informing you on the status of the jailbreak process such as:

  • Reading kernel
  • Calculating offsets
  • Setting up packages
  • Setting up Cydia
  • Continuing with boot

Step 11: After it has rebooted, you’re done. It has been successfully jailbroken and you should be able to find the Cydia icon on your iPad’s home screen  (it may not be on the first page so search for it to locate it).

Check out this video tutorial on how to jailbreak your iPad using evasi0n7:

Please note if the process gets stuck in the middle, it’s safe to restart the process, hardware reset your iPad (if necessary by holding down Hold and Home until it shuts down), and rerun the process.

Note: If you had upgraded to iOS 7.x using the OTA option or using iTunes and are having problems jailbreaking your iOS device with evasi0n, then try doing a full restore using iTunes and then try jailbreaking again to see if it works.

After the jailbreaking process is complete, do not forget to checkout our article on tips to keep your iPad secure.

Please note that jailbreak apps and tweaks relying on MobileSubstrate may have issues with evasi0n7 on iOS 7, so please proceed with caution and install the tweaks that explicitly say they support iOS 7.

Hope this helped. Please don’t forget to let us know how it goes in the comments and drop us a line if you hit any issues.

If you want to show your appreciation for evad3rs dev team’s hard work, then don’t forget to give them a donation using the Support Us link on the evasi0n application.

How to fix stuck on Apple logo, endless reboots and other evasi0n7 jailbreak problems

evasi0n jailbreak

evad3rs gave us a big surprise earlier today by releasing evasi0n7, the eagerly awaited jailbreak for iOS 7 – iOS 7.0.4. If you had troubles jailbreaking your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, here are some troubleshooting tips.

Stuck on Apple logo

A lot of folks in our comments section reported that their device was stuck at the Apple logo after the jailbreak process gets completed. The evad3rs team says that this happens if you had updated to any version of iOS 7 over-the-air.

  • You could try doing a hard reset (Hold down power + home for 10 seconds) and then try running the jailbreak process again. If this doesn’t work then you will have to put your device in DFU mode and restore from backup. Check out our guide on how to put your iOS device in DFU mode.
  • If that didn’t work, you’ll have to wait for evad3rs to release an updated version of evasi0n for the fix. The team advises to do a full backup, and clean restore to iOS 7.0.4 via iTunes until the new version is released.

Endless Reboot loop, tweaks not working

Endless reboot loops could be caused by tweaks not functioning properly. The issue, specifically, is with MobileSubstrate, a library most jailbreak tweaks depend on, which isn’t fully compatible with evasi0n. Saurik, the creator of MobileSubstrate, wasn’t seeded pre-release builds of evasi0n7 so he couldn’t test compatibility of the library. The evad3rs team say they’ll update evasi0n7 with a fix for this issue soon.

evasi0n progress stuck

Another common problem we’re seeing is that evasi0n gets stuck in the middle of the jailbreak process. The jailbreak process typically takes 4-5 minutes, but if it takes too long, the evad3rs team says it is safe restart evasi0n on your PC/Mac, reboot your device and perform the jailbreak process once again.

evasi0n can’t be opened on your Mac

This error could probably be due to Gatekeeper on OS X 10.8 and up. You can bypass this by control-clicking (or right-clicking) evasi0n.app, choosing open, and again clicking on Open in the dialog box that appears. If that doesn’t work, right-click, choose Show Package Contents>Contents>MacOS> and click evasi0n7. (Thanks @Chewyid!)

Stuck on Activation Lock

Activation Lock is a newly added anti-theft feature in iOS 7 that asks the owner’s Apple ID and password if the device is restored, or possibly during the jailbreak process. There doesn’t seem to be a way to bypass this screen if you don’t know the password. So if you’ve purchased your device from someone, contact them and ask them to remotely disable Activation Lock by following the instructions in this post.

General tips

  • Make sure you do a full backup of your iOS device via iTunes before jailbreaking.
  • Disable passcode lock on your iOS device.
  • Avoid iTunes related tasks while the jailbreak process is on.
  • It is advisable you perform a jailbreak on a device that has been updated to iOS 7 via a clean iTunes restore rather than one that has been updated over-the-air.
  • If you’re a Windows user, and you could try running evasi0n as administrator.
  • It is also said that jailbreak tweaks might have issues on devices with the 64-bit A7 chip. That is, the iPhone 5s, iPad Air and iPad mini.

Let us know in the comments if you’ve faced any other issues, and whether you’ve found a fix.
