iPhone 6 may not come with sapphire glass display; might be used for iWatch instead

According to reports, Apple is aggressively pursuing the launch of its new plant in Mesa, Arizona by February and may be acquiring sapphire manufacturing components that could theoretically produce 200 million 5-inch display panels, which cover approximately one years worth of iPhone handsets.

There have been rumors that Apple has started trial production of iPhones with sapphire glass display, so it has sparked off speculations that the critical sub-component Apple is referring to in the document is the sapphire glass display meant for iPhone 6.

A new report now claims that Apple may use the sapphire glass display for iWatch rather than iPhone 6, as it would end up substantially increasing the price of the iPhone.

According to Chinese media sources (which are citing “Taiwan supply chain insiders”), Apple has put a lot of effort into fitting the next iPhone with a sapphire screen. These sources claim that “beta” iPhone units (read: some of the prototypes Apple is currently testing) are already sporting sapphire protected panels, but unfortunately, chances are that they will not make it on the final product.

The problem is not necessarily due to low yield (which still is a problem, at least until Apple’s Arizon plant will be fully operational), but mainly because fitting a sapphire screen on the next iPhone would make its price skyrocket.

The report also claims that according to their sources Apple will use the sapphire display in the iWatch. According to some reports, iWatch could come with 1.5-inch display for women and 1.8-inch display for men.

Last week, an analyst discovered a job posting which suggests that Apple may be planning to add a solar-based wireless charging feature to iPhone by embedding ultra-thin solar cells onto sapphire glass display.
