Infinidock, Infiniboard and Infinifolders 2.1 update adds support for iOS 7 and iPhone 5s

infinidock

Grant Paul aka @chpwn has released a new version of his popular jailbreak tweaks – Infinidock, Infinifolders, Infiniboard to add support for iOS 7 and iPhone 5s.

In case you’re not aware of these jailbreak tweaks, here’s a brief description of the tweaks:

Infinidock ($0.99) allows you to add unlimited number of apps to the iPhone dock. It offers the following features:

  • Add as many icons as you want to your dock and scroll back and forth.
  • Set how many icons per page.
  • Give your dock pages!

Here’s a video walkthrough of Infinidock on iOS 7:

Infiniboard ($0.99) allows you to scroll vertically through the apps on your Home screen. It offers the following features:

  • Add unlimited icons to each page, scroll them up and down.
  • Vertical paging, like a vertical home screen on every page.
  • Preserves your icon layouts, even across full iTunes restores.
  • Many settings for full customization.

Here’s a video walkthrough of Infiniboard on iOS 7:

Infinifolders ($1.99) allows you to add an infinite number of apps to a folder. The tweak was one of the popular jailbreak tweaks, but is not as useful on iOS 7, as it already allows you to add unlimited number of apps to a folder, but I like the ability to scroll vertically through the apps in the folder. It offers the following features:

  • Add as many icons as you want to every folder: there’s no limit.
  • Quickly scroll to see your icons.
  • Preserves your icon layouts, even across full iTunes restores.
  • Lots of settings for full customization.

Here’s a video walkthrough of Infinifolders on iOS 7:

If you had purchased these jailbreak tweaks before, then you can download the updates for free.

Let me know how it goes in the comments below.

Upcoming iOS 7 Jailbreak Tweak will bring Native-looking Quick Launch App Shortcuts to Control Center

controlcenter-tweak

UI Designer Sentry and Cydia developer Jack Willis, are working on a jailbreak tweak that will bring native looking quick launch app shortcuts to Control Center.

The duo had developed jailbreak tweaks such as Auxo, an extremely popular replacement for the iOS app switcher in iOS 6.

We’ve seen quite a few jailbreak tweaks such as that allow you to customize the quick launch shortcuts in Control Center, but they hope to stand out by designing app icons that look native as you can see in the mockups (above and below).

evoau5Y

Since it is wouldn’t be possible to design app icons for all the apps available in the App Store, they have shortlisted 50+ popular apps, and are requesting redditors to give their inputs. Users will still be allowed to select any app from the list of apps installed on their iOS device, but they don’t want the icons to look out of place so they’re designing app icons for the most popular apps,

If you like the native look, please do head over to this reddit thread and let them know if your favorite app is missing from their list.

NoSlowAnimations makes iOS 7 snappier by speeding up animations [Jailbreak Tweak]

noslowanimations

After some users complained about nausea and headaches due to the zoom in animations in iOS 7, Apple enhanced the Reduce Motion setting to minimize both motion and animation in iOS 7.0.3.

So if you enable the settings, iOS replaces the zooming animation with a cross fade animation, which makes iOS 7 feel a lot snappier.

If you want iOS to be even more snappier then install the new jailbreak tweak aptly called NoSlowAnimations. The tweak doesn’t offer any configuration options. But for the best results it is recommended to enable the Reduce Motion settings (Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion).

Check out the video of the jailbreak tweak in action to get a better idea:

NoSlowAnimations developed by Marco Singhof is available for free on Cydia. It’s a nifty little tweak if you don’t like iOS 7 animations.

Let me know what you think of the tweak in the comments below.

UIColors: Jailbreak Tweak lets you add color tint of your choice to iOS 7

Few days back we had covered a tweak called Eclipse, that brought Night mode across the entire iOS.

ColorUI is a new jailbreak tweak that takes things to the next level by giving you the flexibility to add a color tint of your choice across the operating system.

ColorUI allows you to change the primary color, the second color and the color of the text using a color picker and HSB sliders.

uicolors-1

It works with built-in apps, most App Store apps and UI elements such as Table Views, Keyboard, Control Center, Notification Center, navigation bars, grid views, tab Bars, toolbars, sliders, status bar and more.

uicolors-2

If you don’t want an app to be colorized, then you have an option to blacklist the app.

Check out our video walkthrough of the tweak below:

UIColors is available on Cydia for $1.49. It’s quite a cool jailbreak tweak as it gives you the option to customize the color to your choice, and ultimately give iOS, a fresh new look. The only downside of apps like UIColors, Eclipse is that the color tint may not look good across all apps, so you would have selectively add such apps to the blacklist.

Let me know what you think in the comments.

RocketLauncher lets you launch apps from your iPhone’s Lock screen in a whole new way

Lock screen tweaks have always been really popular. That’s probably because it’s the first thing you see when you wake up your device. Not only do you want it to look good, but you also want functionality, and RocketLauncher, a new Lock screen tweak gives us both.

RocketLauncher is a tweak developed by bushe, who brought us LockBar Pro, and it gives us a unique and simple way of launching your favorite applications straight from your iPhone’s lock screen.

Once you download and install this tweak from Cydia in the ModMyi repo, make sure you hop into the setting and enable it.  Once enabled, you can activate it on the lock screen by tapping and holding down your finger on any portion of the lock screen.  It will present you the first 7 apps in your app switcher, unless you tell it otherwise. Simply slide your finger over the icons to see a preview of the app. When you know what app you’d like to open, drag your finger over it and release to automatically launch that specific app.

RocketLauncher1

In the settings, you have a few options:

  • Enable toggle: Enable or disable RocketLauncher
  • Disable Blur: Disable or enable background blur when RocketLauncher is activated
  • Disable Tint: Disable or enable background tint when RocketLauncher is activated
  • Show Full Screen SnapShots: If toggled on, shows fullscreen previews rather than app cards
  • Applications: Set custom applications for RocketLauncher instead of the default app switcher apps
  • Application Order: Order in which the applications set in “Applications” appear
  • Blacklist Applications: Choose to disable applications from showing in RocketLauncher

RocketLauncher2

If you want to check out RocketLauncher in action check the video walkthrough below:

I enjoy having the default app card preview rather than the full screen preview, it just looks much better and less obtrusive in my opinion. You can purchase RocketLauncher in Cydia for $1.00 in the ModMyi repo. As always be sure to tell us what you think in the comments!

P0sixspwn iOS 6.1.3 – iOS 6.1.5 Jailbreak burnt a highly valuable exploit; could have been useful for future jailbreaks [Updated]

Screen Shot 2013-12-30 at 2.03.34 AM

iH8sn0w and winocm released the much awaited untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3 – 6.1.5 for A5+ devices earlier today.

Unfortunately, it looks like the jailbreak community may have to pay a heavy price for it as pod2g has just revealed that one of the exploits used in the untethered iOS 6.1.3 – iOS 6.1.5 jailbreak was highly valuable and could have been useful to jailbreak future iOS versions.

It’s not clear why iH8sn0w and winocm decided to use the exploit as they had been holding off releasing the jailbreak for A5+ devices to ensure they don’t end up burning exploits that could be useful for future iOS versions.

Based on pod2g’s comment it looks like it could make future jailbreaks even more difficult, however it doesn’t mean it would be impossible. It also must be noted that Apple could have also patched the exploits in future versions, so the decision to keep such exploits or to burn them can be a difficult decision, but as pod2g has mentioned, they should have ideally used the same exploit that was used in evasi0n7.

It would have been nice if there was some level of coordination and trust in the jailbreak community as pod2g could have flagged this off before the jailbreak was released.

Update:

iDesignTimes managed to speak to pod2g and comex regarding the situation. comex had this to say about the burnt exploit:

“It makes things more difficult, but not impossible.”

pod2g provided more details about why the exploit was valuable:

They talked a lot of sh– about us, but now they’ve burnt valuable stuff just for 6.1.x … nobody looked at their jailbreak tool, but they burnt something allowing root on all devices without any effort. Something that jailbreakers were aware of for years now. Something that’s usually the entry point for jailbreak research on new iOS versions and devices. Root code execution. Something that usually requires multiple exploits to achieve.

Implications are that it’ll make life of jailbreakers even harder for future iOS jailbreak developments. And I suppose that we’ll never find another root execution and injection exploit of this kind in the future. Basically, it allows files to be made available in the device file system (injection) and allows to execute code as root. For example, we could setup afc2 on new iOS versions to play with the file system and find vulnerabilities. [..]

[..] A jailbreak is a whole chain of exploits … that exploit of @comex’s that we did not want to burn in evasi0n7 [would require] 5 vulnerabilities to do the same thing. That’s why it is so valuable. The fact that Apple did not patched it in years also is important. It means that it is probably the last thing you’d like to burn when there’s nothing remaining.

iH8sn0w and winocm are yet to comment on the matter.

We won’t be surprised if Apple fixes this exploit in iOS 7.1 along with the ones used in the evasi0n7 jailbreak.

What do you think? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Jailbreak hacker Winocm to join Apple later this year

posixpwn

Jailbreak hacker Winocm announced today that he will be joining Apple later this year. Details on his position at the Cupertino company were not revealed, but we can safely assume it will remove him from the jailbreak scene.

Winocm made his announcement on Twitter, where he simply said “I figured now is the right time to say this, I will be working at Apple starting later this year.”

Winocm, along with iH8sn0w and SquiffyPwnm, are known for their work on the p0sixspwn jailbreak of iOS 6.1.3 through 6.1.5. The untethered 6.1.5 jailbreak caused a stir when it burned a valuable exploit that would have made jailbreaking future versions of iOS easier. The vulnerability they burned was uncovered by Comex and known for years by most in the jailbreak scene. The flaw was never used as it was considered a “one-of-a-kind” root execution and injection exploit.

Winocm is following in the footsteps of fellow jailbreak hacker Nicholas Allegra, a.k.a. Comex, who interned at Apple a few years ago and then moved to Google. Other notable hires from the jailbreak hacker and developer community include Peter Hajas, who joined Apple and George Hotz (Geohot), who left jailbreaking temporarily to work for Facebook.

Redditor’s Top 10 reasons to Jailbreak iOS 7; What are yours?

ios-7-jailbreak

It has been just over three weeks since evad3rs released evasi0n7, the much awaited jailbreak for iOS 7.

Since then Cydia developers have been working hard to release updated version of the their tweaks to add support for iOS 7 and 64-bit A7 devices like the iPhone 5s, iPad Air and Retina iPad mini.

While we’re still waiting for some of our favorite tweaks such as Zephyr, Springtomize 3 to be released for iOS 7 and iPhone 5s, a majority of them are now compatible with iOS 7 and iPhone 5s. We’ve also seen quite a few new tweaks that have enhanced the functionality of features like Control Center.

So it is a good time to take a look at the top reasons to jailbreak iOS 7. Redditor, textredditor, has given the following reasons for jailbreaking iOS 7:

1. Activator:

Activator is an awesome jailbreak tweak by Ryan Petrich that you probably already know about. For those who’re new to jailbreaking, Activator lets you assign various actions that get called when a certain event, selected by you, occurs. The trigger can be a gesture, a tap on a specific area, the press of a button, a change of charging state or a bunch of other options. The “actions” list is equally diverse, letting you launch apps, toggle settings and is extensible via tweaks on Cydia.

Petrich has added more functionality to Activator for iPhone 5s users by allowing users to use Touch ID for any activator action.

2. BlurPaper:

The jailbreak tweak blurs the Home screen and Lock screen wallpaper. You need to add the following repo to Cydia http://repo.pnre.co.vu to install the tweak.

l2IdJ3C

3. Flux

We’ve all been there – a notification arrives on your iPhone late at night, and the screen brightness nearly blinds you for the first few seconds after unlocking. F.lux aims to solve exactly this problem by adjusting the color of your iPhone’s display to better adapt to the time of the day.

4. FlipControlCenter

FlipControlCenter was one of the first jailbreak tweaks for Control Center. It lets you customize and add more toggles to Control Center. Check this post for more details.

5. CCHide

CCHide allows you to hide various sections of Control Center. It also allows you to hide playback controls in Control Center when music is not playing. Jailbreak tweaks such as CCQuick Pro and Cloaky that offer similar functionality and more.

3s1EeB6

6. IconTool

IconTool is a useful jailbreak tweak that lets you backup and restore app data, rename icons, clear badges and more.

6BQoJI6

7. iFile

iFile is a full-blown file manager for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, which comes with tons of features such as compressing, deleting, viewing, copying, moving, renaming files and much more.

WOreLzX

8. Messages Customiser

Messages Customiser as the name suggests lets you customize almost every aspect of the Messages app in iOS 7 such as change the color of the message bubbles, enable Contact photos and lots more.

oVowYGn

9. SwipeSelection

SwipeSelection brings a cool new way to edit text in iOS using gestures.

qs9I3Mr

10. VideoPane

VideoPane, developed by Ryan Petrich, is an awesome tweak that allows you to detach a video from most video players and bring it straight to your Springboard.  You’re then able to navigate your iPhone or iPad by opening and closing apps while the video still plays on top. It looks even better in iOS 7.

zv6xqCJ

If you’re wondering how he has tweaked the appearance of the Home screen, then here’s the list of tweaks and themes:

  • Winterboard
  • M’flat iOS 7 Winterboard theme – Head over to this link for the installation instructions.
  • The Circular Connectivity Indicators tweak gives you the circular status indicators. You need to add the following repo to Cydia http://pi.kartikye.me/repo to install the tweak.
  • The name of the jailbreak tweak that makes the icons circular is Kiki, which can be installed from the following repo: http://pi.kartikye.me/repo (same as the previous one).
  • HomeScreenDesigner was used to create the 3×4 layout. You can apply 3×4 Textredditor 2014 layout in the Uploaded tab.
  • Cloaky was used to hide certain items in the Status bar.
  • Home screen Wallpaper – link
  • TransparentDock was used to remove blurred background from the iOS 7 dock.

These are some really cool reasons to jailbreak iOS 7, and I loved the way he has created gifs to show the functionality. Don’t forget to go to reddit, and vote for this awesome post.

Let me know what are your top reasons to jailbreak iOS 7.

Fix for Status Bar issues after jailbreaking iOS 7

status-bar-issue

Have you noticed an issue with the Status bar after jailbreaking iOS 7? You’re not alone.

A number of users have noticed that either the status bar shows up when it shouldn’t like when you’re seeing photos in the Photos app in full-screen mode, or it disappears when it should be visible such as the Stocks apps or the Phone app, or it just shows up in the wrong color.

If it has been annoying you then there is a now a tweak called StatusBarFix2 that can fix the issue.

The developer of the tweak, who goes by the handle pNre says that the bug is caused by Cydia moving system apps when it is launch for the first time. This is done to allow users to install third-party apps without the risk of filling up the root partition.

Here’s how to fix the issue. You will first need to add the pNre repo (http://repo.pnre.co.vu/) to Cydia to install the tweak. If you need help follow these instructions:

  • Launch Cydia
  • Tap on Manages tab, then tap on Sources
  • Then tap on Edit in the top right corner, followed by Add.
  • Enter the following: repo.pnre.co.vu after http://
  • Then tap on the Add Sources button.
  • Tap on the Return to Cydia button when prompted.
  • You should now see the pNre repo in the list of Sources. Tap on it, then tap on StatusBarFix2.
  • Then tap on the Install, followed by Confirm.
  • Tap on the Restart SpringBoard button when prompted.

That’s it. This should fix most of the Status bar issues. If the issue is still not fixed in some apps, then you may need to use Terminal (Mac) or an SSH client (Windows) and ssh into your device. Here are the instructions:

  • Open the app in which you’re still facing the problem e.g. Stocks
  • Connect to your iOS device via SSH (check out the video below if you need help).
  • Run the following command in Terminal: killall -9 Stocks (you need to replace Stocks with the name of the app with which you’re facing the issue)
  • This will close the Stocks app

However, when you launch it again, the Status bar issue should be fixed.

Check out our detailed video walkthrough of how to fix the issue if you’re having any problems following the above instructions:

evasi0n7 Jailbreak works with iOS 7.0.5

ios-7-0-5-logo

Apple released iOS 7.0.5 earlier today to correct networking provisioning for some iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models sold in China.

If you got the update and accidentally updated to it, then the good news is that iOS 7.0.5 can still be jailbroken using evasi0n7.

Security researcher, i0nic has just tweeted a screenshot of Cydia running on his iPhone 5s running iOS 7.0.5, and has confirmed that evasi0n7 still works with iOS 7.0.5.

cydia-ios-7-0-5

This means that Apple hasn’t fixed the exploits used by evasi0n7 in iOS 7.0.5, which is not surprising as it is just a minor update. Please note that the current version of evasi0n7 won’t work as it supports up to iOS 7.0.4, however evad3rs will be able to add support for iOS 7.0.5 with a small change.

There are quite a few unofficial versions of evasi0n7 that allow you jailbreak iOS 7.0.5, however we would recommend waiting for evasi0n7 team to release the official version.

As always, we’ll let you know when the evasi0n7 for iOS 7.0.5 is released, so stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or join our Facebook Fan pagefollow us on Twitteradd us to your circles on Google+ or subscribe to our RSS feed.

SemiRestore will be updated to support iOS 7, will use OpenSSH instead of AFC2

SemiRestore

As you’ve probably heard by now, evasi0n jailbreak won’t work with the upcoming iOS 7.1 software update as Apple has patched a number of vulnerabilities used in evasi0n, so jailbreakers have been advised to avoid upgrading to it.

If you’re a jailbreaker who is nervous about the imminent launch of iOS 7.1, then we’ve some good news for you.

CoolStar, the developer of SemiRestore has just indicated that he is working on an update for his tool for iOS 7.

SemiRestore was first released for iOS 6.x. It is a nifty tool that allows users to restore their jailbroken iOS device to near stock condition without losing the jailbreak.

SemiRestore can come in handy when you get into a reboot loop issue because of a problematic/buggy tweak, which can usually force you to restore your device, that would also mean losing the jailbreak. Since it removes the jailbreak tweaks during the restore process, it can help in such cases.

CoolStar has tweeted that he plans to use OpenSSH for the iOS 7.0 version instead of AFC2*, which was used for iOS 6.x.

I looks like the developer is planning to use OpenSSH based on saurik’s suggestion, who has been advocating the use of OpenSSH over AFC2.

So it may be a good idea to install OpenSSH on your jailbroken iOS device, so that you have the option to restore to near stock condition when SemiRestore for iOS 7 is released and recover from a situation where a tweak brin. Please note that you should change the password after installing OpenSSH to change the root password of your jailbroken iOS device to prevent someone from remotely accessing your iOS device. You can check our guide if you need help.

CoolStar hasn’t provided any details on when it will be released. As always, we’ll let you know as soon as there are any further updates, so stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or join our Facebook Fan pagefollow us on Twitteradd us to your circles on Google+ or subscribe to our RSS feed.

*AFC – Apple File Connection is a service that runs on every iPhone / iPod, which iTunes uses to exchange files with the device. AFC2 is a an additional AFC service, configured to allow access to the whole filesystem. (via iPhone wiki)

EFF: Sign Petition to Tell the U.S. Copyright Office That Jailbreaking is Not a Crime

iPhone with a 4-inch screen?

Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has asked the U.S. Copyright Office to declare that jailbreaking does not violate the DMCA.

In addition to requesting iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users in the U.S. to send comments to Copyright Office to convince them to renew and expand the exemptions for jailbreaking, EFF is also encouraging users to sign the petition at jailbreakingisnotacrime.org. The petition states:

You bought it. You own it. Tell the Copyright Office: let me install whatever software I want on my phone, tablet, or video game system.

Back in 2010, EFF had won critical exemption to the DMCA, which made it legal for users  in the US to jailbreak their iPhone.

At that time, Apple had told the U.S. Copyright Office that it believed jailbreaking an iPhone is a violation of the DMCA and infringes on its copyright. Apple also informed the Copyright Office that the exemption request by Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) was not acceptable as the very act of jailbreaking the iPhone results in copyright infringement.

However, the exemption needs to be renewed otherwise it would expire, which could make jailbreaking your iOS device illegal. Interestingly, it looks like the exemption was only for smartphones, so it did not cover tablets like Apple’s iPad. EFF wants to fix that by expanding the exemption to also cover tablets.

So if you’re in the U.S. and love jailbreaking your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, then don’t waste any time and sign the petition by heading over to jailbreakingisnotacrime.org as there is only 14 days left to sign it.

Redns0w 0.9.10b5: Untethered iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak Updated To Fix iBooks DRM Issue

Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 Redsn0w

iPhone Dev team has released an updated version of Redns0w – Redsn0w 0.9.10b5, which includes the fix for the iBooks issue involving DRM.

Please note that Redsn0w and Corona iOS 5.0.1 Untether jailbreak supports iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPod touch 4G, iPod touch 3G and Absinthe jailbreak and the Redsn0w CLI tool supports iPhone 4S and iPad 2. So this update is not meant for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users.

iPhone Dev team has provided the following information on their blog about the latest version:

redsn0w version b5 incorporates yet another fix for iBooks, this time involving DRM.  @planetbeing wrote a utility called “crazeles” that overcomes jailbreak detection by iBooks that would cause about 10% of images to show incorrectly.  This fix is similar to the “hunnypot” fix that @comex wrote for the 4.x jailbreak.  As usual, you can choose to install the fix either by re-running redsn0w over your existing jailbreak (de-select Cydia if you do that), or by installing the corona package from Cydia (it’s the same set of files no matter which way you choose).
TIP: If auto-detection fails and redsn0w tells you no identifying data was found, you can always pre-select the appropriate 5.0.1 IPSW using “Extras->Select IPSW”.
Chronic Dev team are also expected an update for the Corona iOS 5.0.1 Untether (v1.0.6). If you’ve already jailbroken your iOS device using Redns0w 0.9.10 then the easiest method is to install the Corona iOS 5.0.1 Untether from Cydia when it is available. You can also re-run Redsn0w over the existing jailbreak, but remember to de-select.
You can download Redsn0w 0.9.10b5 using this link for Mac and this link for Windows.

Corona iOS 5.0.1 Untether Updated to Fix iBooks DRM Issue

greenpois0n absinthe

Jay Freeman a.k.a saurik – founder and developer of Cydia has just released a new version Corona iOS 5.0.1 Untether jailbreak (v1.0-7) to fix the DRM iBooks issue.

iPhone Dev team had released a new version of Redsn0w – Redsn0w 0.9.10b5 yesterday that included a fix for the iBooks DRM issue. But the Corona iOS 5.0.1 Untether update that is available on Cydia is an easier option.

Saurik announced the availability of Corona iOS 5.0.1 on Twitter:

Corona 1.0-6: @planetbeing put a lot of work into solving iBooks image loading bugs. All users (however jailbroken) on 5.0.1 should install.

However, there was some dependency issue, which he soon corrected and released Corona 1.0-7.

iPhone Dev team had provided the following details about the fix:

@planetbeing wrote a utility called “crazeles” that overcomes jailbreak detection by iBooks that would cause about 10% of images to show incorrectly.  This fix is similar to the “hunnypot” fix that @comex wrote for the 4.x jailbreak.

Saurik has recommended all users (except for iPhone 3GS with older bootrom) who have jailbroken their iOS device, which includes iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS (except for iPhone 3GS with older bootrom), iPad 2, iPad 1, iPod touch 3rd gen, iPod touch 4th gen to install the latest version of Corona 5.0.1 jailbreak from Cydia. So it basically means that it doesn’t matter if you’ve used Absinthe jailbreak or Redsn0w to jailbreak your iOS device, one can install the Corona 1.0-7 jailbreak.

Please note that it is always a good idea to take a backup of your iOS device before proceeding as a number of users  have reported issues after installing previous Corona jailbreak updates.

If the iBooks DRM issue doesn’t bother you then we would suggest holding off updating to the new version until you see positive feedback in the comments.

Update 1:

We installed Corona 1.0-7 on an iPhone 4S jailbroken using Absinthe jailbreak and iPod touch 4G using Redsn0w. We didn’t hit any issue on the iPod touch 4G. However, iPhone 4S initially went into safe mode after installing the update. Things have been fine after rebooting the iPhone again.

Update 2:

Saurik has released another update for Corona 5.0.1 Untether (v1.0-8) to fix issues with iPhone 4S running iOS 5.

Corona 1.0-8: @sbingner noticed that 1.0-6/7 failed on iPhone 4S 5.0 (the only supported 5.0 build; absinthe’s Corona had worked): fixed. :(

EFF’s Attorney Talks About The Legality of Jailbreaking

iPhone with a 4-inch screen?

We had reported in January that jailbreaking your iPhone may become illegal if DMCA exemption, which was granted back in 2010, expires.

Just like last time, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has taken the lead and has asked the U.S. Copyright Office to declare that jailbreaking does not violate the DMCA.

Gizmodo interviewed EFF staff attorney Mitch Stoltz to talk about the legality of jailbreaking. Here are some excerpts from that interview:

Why is the debate over the legality of jailbreaking suddenly in the news again?

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act has an exemptions process. The Library of Congress every three years makes exemptions to the law. Those have to be renewed, so we’re coming up on the next cycle. In the last cycle, the EFF asked for an exemption so that you can jailbreak a smartphone that you own, to run your own software on it, so that wouldn’t be a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, section 1201.

The ultimate question here, then, is what kind of rights, if any, do the hardware manufacturers have over the hardware once it’s sold to you?

That’s a big question. They can have rights that come from contracts. Say you buy a smartphone from a carrier that says what you can and you can’t do with the phone. I don’t know if you want me to get into whether those sort of rights are a good thing or not, but if you look at the issue at hand it is exactly that. It gets into the rights of a hardware manufacturer and the owner of a piece of hardware, which are sort of negative rights. They aren’t stated necessarily in the law, but they’re things we all understand. We see comments that people have posted to the Copyright Office in support of our requests on jailbreaking, and over and over the analogy that they’re making is to a car — that to prevent jailbreaking is like welding the hood shut on a car or to legally prevent you from modifying a car that you own and that just strikes a lot of people as absurd.

You can read the entire interview on Gizmodo.

If you love jailbreaking then you can help by submitting comments on the U.S. Copyright Office website. EFF has also provided a list of questions on their website that you should address in the comments.

In addition to requesting iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users in the U.S. to send comments to Copyright Office to convince them to renew and expand the exemptions for jailbreaking to include tablets like iPad, EFF is also encouraging users to sign the petition at jailbreakingisnotacrime.org.

Please note that the comments are due by February 10th at 5 p.m. Eastern time, so don’t waste anytime and head over to the link provided above and submit your comments.

iPhone Dev Team Warn Jailbreakers to Avoid Updating to iOS 5.1

Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 Redsn0w

With less than 30 minutes to go for Apple’s iPad 3 event, iPhone Dev team has just warned jailbreakers to avoid updating their iOS devices to iOS 5.1, which is likely to released this week.

iPhone Dev team have provided the following details on their blog in a post titled “March Mayhem”:

As the whole tech world waits for today’s Apple Event, it seems like a good time to remind both veteran and amateur jailbreakers about the fundamental rule of jailbreaking:  Avoid firmware updates!

In all likelihood we’ll see the GM “gold master” version of 5.1 this week.  DO NOT UPDATE TO 5.1, because you may lose your jailbreak!  The rest of this post details the subtleties with this rule, but if there’s only one message to take home, it’s the overall “do not update” message!  Now for the nitty gritty exceptions:

  • Soon after 5.1 appears on Apple’s public servers (i.e. iTunes starts to offer it), Apple will stop signing 5.0.1 SHSH blobs.
  • If you have an iPhone4S, the basic rule above is really the only rule:  you cannot restore back to 5.0.1 once the 5.0.1 signing window is closed, no matter what (even if you saved your SHSH blobs).
  • If you have an iPad2 with saved 4.x hashes, you can in fact downgrade to that 4.x but you won’t be able to get to 5.0.1 once the 5.0.1 signing window is closed (even if you saved your 5.0.1 SHSH blobs).
  • If you have a device earlier than the iPad2, you can downgrade to whatever version you want, as long as you have saved SHSH blobs for that version.  You’ll need the assistance of geohot’s limera1n exploit with tools like redsn0w to get into “pwned DFU mode” and bypass the downgrade restriction.

As you can see, it really is a nuanced landscape so it’s sometimes hard to drive the message home to new jailbreakers.  But the basic rule is the simplest (and it’s better to be safe than sorry!):  If you update to 5.1 you’ll very likely lose your jailbreak, so don’t do it!  Exceptions are noted above.

As always, we’ll let you know as soon as there’s any update so stay tuned at iPhone Hacks or join our Facebook Fan page or follow us on Twitter or add us on Google+ or subscribe to our RSS feed.

Redsn0w 0.9.10b6: Tethered Jailbreak For iOS 5.1 For iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1 And iPod Touch 3G / 4G Released

Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 Redsn0w

iPhone Dev team has just released a new version of Redsn0w to jailbreak iOS 5.1 that was released just few hours back.

Redsn0w 0.9.10b6 supports iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1 and3rd-generation iPod touch. It doesn’t support iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or the new iPad (3rd generation iPad).

iPhone Dev team has provided the following details:

Because of geohot’s limera1n exploit, those with devices earlier than the iPad2 can test the 5.1 jailbreak waters if they really want to, using redsn0w 0.9.10b6.  Here’s what you need to know:

  • This is a *tethered* 5.1 jailbreak for non-A5 devices.  You’ll need to use redsn0w to “Just Boot” your device every time it power cycles, otherwise jailbreak apps won’t work (neither will Safari).
  • If you use ultrasn0w for your carrier unlock, be sure to use a custom IPSW to get to 5.1 first!  Don’t ever restore to a stock Apple IPSW!  Use redsn0w’s “Custom IPSW” button to create a NO_BB_* version of the 5.1 IPSW and restore to that instead of the stock one.  (That option is available only to 3GS and iPhone4-GSM owners.)  ultrasn0w itself will be updated for 5.1 in the next few days (same baseband support, not 5.1’s baseband).
  • If you’re lucky enough to have an old-bootrom 3GS, this jailbreak is actually untethered (redsn0w will figure that part out automatically).
  • While we were at it, we added @pod2g’s steaks4uce exploit to support MC models of the iPod touch 2G (whose last firmware was 4.2.1).  So now redsn0w will auto-detect and jailbreak all versions of that older device.
  • iBooks won’t work until a future update of redsn0w

Please note that Redsn0w 0.9.10b6 can only perform a tethered jailbreak on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1 and 3rd-generation iPod touch, which means that you need to connect your iOS device to the computer on every reboot. So if you’ve jailbroken your iOS device running on iOS 5.0.1, you are better off avoiding the iOS 5.1 software update, which doesn’t include any major feature.

However, if you’ve accidentally updated your iOS device to iOS 5.1 then you can use Redsn0w 0.9.10b6. You can download Redsn0w 0.9.10b6 using this link for Mac and this link for Windows.

Update:

If you need help in jailbreak your iOS device on iOS 5.1 then checkout our detailed step-by-step guides:

  • iPhone 4/iPhone 3GS
  • iPad 1
  • iPod touch 4G/iPod touch 3G

iPhone Dev team hasn’t provided any update on the jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 running iOS 5.1. We’ll let you know as soon as there’s any update so stay tuned at iPhone Hacks or join our Facebook Fan page or follow us on Twitter or add us on Google+ or subscribe to our RSS feed.

How To Jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS Running iOS 5.1 Using Redsn0w

Jailbreak iPod Touch On iOS 4.2.1 Redsn0w

Apple released iOS 5.1 yesterday, which includes some minor improves and bug fixes.

iPhone Dev team has just released a new version of Redsn0w - Redsn0w 0.9.10b6 that supports iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1 and3rd-generation and 4th generation iPod touch.

But if you accidentally upgraded to iOS 5.1 (don’t update to iOS 5.1 if you are on iOS 5.0.1 or lower) and want to jailbreak your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS then you’ve come to the right place. We will take you through the step by step procedure to jailbreak your iPhone on iOS 5.0.1 using Redsn0w.

Here are some important points to note before you proceed.

  • This guide is meant for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS users. iPod touch 4G and iPod touch 3G users can checkout this guide, while iPad users can checkout this guide.
  • Important note to iPhone unlockers: Please don’t use this guide if you want to preserve your iPhone’s baseband.
  • Redsn0w 0.9.10b6b for Mac and Redsn0w 0.9.10b6b for Windows only supports a tethered jailbreak, which means that you need to connect your iPhone to the computer on every reboot (except iPhone 3GS with older bootrom).
  • Please note that jailbreaking your iPhone may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk.
  • Please do not forget to backup your iPhone before you proceed. You can refer to this post for instructions on how to backup your iPhone.
  • If you’ve jailbroken your iPhone then you can use jailbreak apps such as PkgBackup from Cydia to take a backup of all the jailbreak apps and tweaks so you can reinstall them easily after successfully jailbreaking your iPhone rather then installing them individually. However, if you’re moving from iOS 4.x to iOS 5, it may be a good idea to reinstall the jailbreak apps to avoid compatibility issues.
  • After the jailbreaking process is complete, do not forget to checkout our article on tips to keep your iPhone secure.
  • Please ensure you are running latest version of iTunes i.e. iTunes 10.5 or later.
  • Known issue: iBooks won’t work if you jailbreak your iPod touch using Redsn0w 0.9.10.b6. Dev team is working hard to fix the issue.

You can follow these step-by-step instructions to jailbreak your iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS with the assumption that you’ve already updated your iPhone to iOS 5.1 (please note Settings –> General –> About –> Version should be 5.1):

Step 1: Download Redsn0w for Windows from this link and Redsn0w for Mac from this link and save the application in a folder named “Redsn0w” on your desktop.

Step 2: Double click the Redsn0w zip file and extract the application to the Redsn0w folder. Navigate back to the Redsn0w folder and launch the Redsn0w application.

Step 3: After launching Redsn0w, click on the Jailbreak button.

Windows 7 users should run the exe in Windows XP compatibility mode (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select Properties, then select the Compatibility tab and select Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP). Windows XP and Windows 7 users should run Redsn0w as ‘Administrator’ (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select ‘Run as an Administrator’).

Step 4: You will now be prompted plug your iPhone to the computer and switch it OFF. Follow the instructions and click on ‘Next‘ to move to the next screen:

Step 5: You will now need to put your iPhone into the DFU mode. Redsn0w will take you through the necessary steps:

(a) Hold the Power button on iPhone down for 3 seconds:

(b) Now simultaneously hold the Home button and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds:

(c) Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until Redsn0w detects the device:

Step 6: Your iPhone should reboot now. Please remember to release the Home button.

Step 7: Redsn0w will now start preparing the jailbreak data.

Step 8: You will now be prompted to select the jailbreak options you would like. Make sure Cydia is selected and select ‘Next‘ to continue.

Step 9: You iPhone will be rebooted again and Redsn0w will now begin uploading the new RAM disk and kernel.

Step 10: You will now be notified once the jailbreaking process is complete. Click on the ‘Finish‘ button to exit the application.

Step 11: Your iPhone will reboot once again (which could take approximately 5 minutes). After it has rebooted, your iPhone should be successfully jailbroken. You should find Cydia jailbreak app on your iPod touch’s home screen.

If you’re new to the jailbreaking world and wondering what to do after jailbreaking your iPhone, checkout our jailbreak apps category page to find out the apps you can install on your iPhone using the Cydia app. Please note that some of the jailbreak apps and tweaks may not be compatible with iOS 5.1 so please be cautious while installing them.

Tethered Jailbreak:

Once Redsn0w has finished jailbreaking your iPhone, you will need to boot it tethered, which means that if you need to reboot your iPhone it will be stuck on the Apple logo. All you need to do is rerun Redsn0w and this time click on Extras and then click on Just boot from the list of options and follow the on screen instructions to reboot your iPhone.

Troubleshooting:

How to fix the White/Blank Cydia icon issue:

If you notice the white Cydia icon (which fails to launch) after successfully jailbreaking your iPod touch. Then follow these steps to fix the issue.

  • Launch Redsn0w again.
  • Click on Extras and then click on Just Boot from the list of options.
  • You will now be prompted to plug your iPhone to the computer and switch it off. Follow the instructions in the correct sequence and click on ‘Next‘ to move to the next screen:
  • You will now need to put your iPhone into the DFU mode. Redsn0w will take you through the necessary steps:
    • Hold the Power button on iPhone down for 3 seconds.
    • Now simultaneously hold the iPhone and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds.
    • Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until Redsn0w detects the device.
  • Your device will reboot and you will see the Pwnage icon on your iPod touch’s screen for few minutes.
  • After your iPhone is successfully rebooted, you will see the regular Cydia icon (brown). You should now be able to launch Cydia without any issue.

Hope this helped. Please don’t forget to let us know how it goes and feel free to drop us a line if you hit any issues.

Update (April 15th, 2012):

Dev team has updated Redsn0w to 0.9.10b6b to fix an issue affecting those users running OS X 10.5.x or earlier. So we have updated the download link.

Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2: Tethered Jailbreak For iOS 5.1 For iPhone, iPad And iPod Touch Released

Sn0wbreeze

iH8sn0w has also released Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 to jailbreak iOS 5.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch that was just released by Apple.

Sn0wbreeze is considered the unofficial PwnageTool for Windows. It allows users to create custom iOS 5.1 firmware file that is pre-jailbroken, which can then be used to upgrade their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to iOS 5.1. In case of iPhone, Sn0wbreeze also preserves the baseband from getting upgraded so that it can be unlocked using Ultrasn0w (though Ultrasn0w is not yet compatible with iOS 5.1 yet).

According to the release notes, Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 includes the following features:

  • Added Tethered Jailbreak support for 3GS/iPod Touch 3/A4 Users on iOS 5.1 (9B176)
  • iPhone 3GS old-bootrom users are untethered on 5.1/9B176 (as usual).
  • Bug Fixes (Specifically with the iPad baseband and iPhone 2G).
  • Re-added the iPhone Dev-Team’s iPhone 2G permanent unlock ‘BootNeuter’.
Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 supports the following iOS 5.1 devices:
  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G
  • iPad 1
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 4 (GSM)
  • iPhone 4 (CDMA)

Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 supports an untethered jailbreak for iPhone 3GS (old bootrom) and a tethered jailbreak for the remaining iOS 5.1 devices mentioned above, which means that you need to connect your iOS device to the computer on every reboot. Sn0wbreeze cannot jailbreak iPad 2 or iPhone 4S, which are powered by Apple’s A5 chip. iH8sn0w explains why the new version of Sn0wbreeze does not support iPhone 4S and iPad 2 currently:

A low level (DFU/iBoot/LLB) exploit is required to start the restoration of custom IPSWs. The past two jailbreaks (JailbreakMe & absinthe) for the A5 worked within iOS itself. These exploits are not capable of bringing the iDevice into a state where it will accept custom IPSWs. Therefore, an A5 device cannot currently downgrade to an iOS revision that Apple is no longer signing (even with SHSH blobs) and it cannot preserve the baseband when updating to a newer iOS revision.

Please note that iPhone Dev team strongly recommends jailbreakers and unlockers to avoid upgrading to iOS 5.1 so use Sn0wbreeze or recently released Redsn0w only if you have accidentally upgraded to iOS 5.1.

But if you can’t wait then you can download Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 for Windows using this link.

Pod2G Actively Working On Untethered Jailbreak For iOS 5.1

greenpois0n absinthe

iPhone Dev team and iH8sn0w have already released Redsn0w and Sn0wbreeze that supports a tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.

If you are wondering what’s the update on the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 and support for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 then the latest update is that pod2G who was part of the Jailbreak Dream team that brought us Absinthe jailbreak – the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 for A5 powered iOS devices is working hard on it. He just tweeted:

Hi, I’ve no clue, but I’m working actively on finding vulnerabilities in 5.1.

Though the jailbreak Dream team hasn’t clarified if iOS 5.1 fixes the vulnerability used by the Absinthe jailbreak, we’re assuming that Apple has fixed it based on pod2G’s comment that he is actively working on finding vulnerabilities in iOS 5.1.

So if you’re still on iOS 5.0.1, then as advised by the iPhone Dev team, avoid updating to iOS 5.1 until the jailbreak tools for iOS 5.1 are released.

As always, we’ll let you know as soon as there’s any update so stay tuned at iPhone Hacks or join our Facebook Fan page or follow us on Twitter or add us on Google+ or subscribe to our RSS feed.

pod2g Confirms Jailbreak For iOS 6.1 is Ready

evad3rs

When pod2g dared Apple to release iOS 6.1, we assumed that the hackers had the jailbreak ready for it, however weren’t completely confident.

We’ve now got a confirmation that it is indeed is true. In an interview with iDigitalTimes, pod2g has confirmed that an jailbreak for iOS 6.1 is ready and has credited team members planetbeing and pimskeks for it.

pod2g has recently announced that he, MuscleNerd and planetbeing of the iPhone Dev Team and pimskeks of the Chronic Dev  team  are forming a team called evad3rs.

pod2g had this to say:

“For your information and this is important to me that everybody knows about it also, this jailbreak will be @planetbeing and @pimskeks. I arrived at the end, gave ideas that pushed them to their maximum, I kinda unblocked the situation, but it would certainly have happened without me helping.

Now I am helping as much as I can in terms of communication, websites, and also development, but I was not involved the same way as previous, focused on my work and all… Yes, in order @planetbeing, @pimskeks, then me.”

pod2g has also clarified that iOS 6.0 is jailbroken as is iOS 6.1 beta 4. They are waiting for Apple to release iOS 6.1 GM or iOS 6.1 to check if Apple has fixed any of the loop holes used by them before releasing the jailbreak.

“6.0 is jailbroken, 6.1 beta 4 also. Now we are waiting 6.1 to confirm and release.”

But with the release of iOS 6.1 beta 5 over the weekend, it looks like the jailbreak may get delayed further.

MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev team and iH8sn0w, developer of Sn0wbreeze has pointed out that iOS 6.1 beta 5 isn’t like other beta versions as it has no ReleaseType lock keys, so there is no expiration. It is widely speculated that Apple could release iOS 6.1 directly to the public instead of releasing iOS 6.1 golden master.

MuscleNerd: iOS 6.1 Jailbreak Will Support All Devices, Except Apple TV 3

evad3rs

We’ve some more good news of the jailbreaking front. MuscleNerd has just confirmed on Twitter that the untethered iOS 6.1 jailbreak will support all iOS 6.1 compatible devices, except for Apple TV 3 and possibly even Apple TV 2.

Earlier, we had reported that pod2g now a member of the new Evad3rs dev team had confirmed that they had a jailbreak for iOS 6.1 and were waiting for Apple to release iOS 6.1.

MuscleNerd confirmed it while responding to one of his followers:

He has also clarified that it may not support Apple TV 3, but it may support Apple TV 2 if Apple releases the iOS firmware update for it in time:

This means that the following iOS devices will be supported:

  • iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS
  • iPad 4, iPad 3, iPad 2, iPad mini
  • iPod touch 5G, iPod Touch 4G

It doesn’t mean there won’t be a jailbreak for Apple TV 3. MuscleNerd has indicated that they’re areas, which could be useful in hacking Apple TV 3:

While none of the members of the Evad3rs team have explicitly confirmed it, we believe that the jailbreak is an untethered jailbreak.

We’ll let you know as soon as there is any update. For the latest jailbreak news, don’t forget to join our Facebook Fan page or follow us on Twitter or add us on Google+ or subscribe to our RSS feed.
