Apple is gearing up to manufacture sapphire in a newly purchased facility in Mesa, Arizona. The Cupertino company reportedly cleared all the government hurdles necessary to receive a tax break and move forward with the deal.
According to a report in AZ Central, the Gilbert Public Schools’ board voted 5-0 in favor of a deal that would give Apple a tax break for its sapphire manufacturing project. This approval is a big victory for Apple as the Gilbert board was the last of eight government entities that were needed to approve a reclassification of the property to allow for this reduction in taxes. The school board met last week and was divided on the project with two members supporting the deal and two members opposing the deal. All members eventually supported the deal after Apple threatened to take its project elsewhere and residents voiced their support of the tax break.
Apple is working with material manufacturer GT Advanced to produce sapphire. The material could eventually land in the iPad and iPhone as its hardness and resistance to cracking make it a desirable material for a touchscreen display.
