Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster is back again with his semiannual survey of US teenagers. Similar to what was recorded in past surveys, both the iPhone and iPad are popular among those between the ages of 13 and 19.
Munster’s latest survey shows that 55% of teens now own an iPhone, up from 48% earlier this year. The iPad is also popular among this age group with almost 70% of tablet owners rocking an iPad. The closest competitor to the iPad are Android tablets which are owned by a mere 23% of teens in the survey.
Looking at upcoming purchases, Apple keeps its dominance over Samsung and other Android competitors. Among those teens who plan to buy a tablet in the next 6 months, 64% said they want to purchase an iPad. A similar level of demand exists for the iPhone, with 65% of teen respondents saying they plan on buying an iPhone for their next phone.
Despite Samsung’s marketing push that portrays the iPhone as a device for the ‘rents, Apple’s brand has remained strong among teens. Muster writes in his research note,
“We believe that while Samsung seemingly had some momentum with teens over the past year, Apple’s brand and product quality has enabled it to remain the top choice for teen consumer electronics.”
With the colorful and less expensive iPhone 5c, a powerful iPhone 5s and new iPads on the horizon, Apple’s desirability among teenagers will likely remain strong for the coming quarters.
