Jailbreak hacker Winocm to join Apple later this year

Jailbreak hacker Winocm announced today that he will be joining Apple later this year. Details on his position at the Cupertino company were not revealed, but we can safely assume it will remove him from the jailbreak scene.

Winocm made his announcement on Twitter, where he simply said “I figured now is the right time to say this, I will be working at Apple starting later this year.”

Winocm, along with iH8sn0w and SquiffyPwnm, are known for their work on the p0sixspwn jailbreak of iOS 6.1.3 through 6.1.5. The untethered 6.1.5 jailbreak caused a stir when it burned a valuable exploit that would have made jailbreaking future versions of iOS easier. The vulnerability they burned was uncovered by Comex and known for years by most in the jailbreak scene. The flaw was never used as it was considered a “one-of-a-kind” root execution and injection exploit.

Winocm is following in the footsteps of fellow jailbreak hacker Nicholas Allegra, a.k.a. Comex, who interned at Apple a few years ago and then moved to Google. Other notable hires from the jailbreak hacker and developer community include Peter Hajas, who joined Apple and George Hotz (Geohot), who left jailbreaking temporarily to work for Facebook.
