iOS in the Car is an upcoming feature, which will let users access Maps, Messages, and other services on their car’s touchscreen console. Last week developer Steven Troughton-Smith posted screenshots of the iOS in the Car feature from iOS 7.1 beta.

Troughton-Smith has now posted a video, which shows how the feature will work. The video shows the iOS in the Car feature running on a separate 800×480 window in the iOS Simulator, which is part of Xcode, Apple’s integrated development environment (IDE).

He has provided the following details in the YouTube description:

All available in the public, shipping version of iOS 7. Serial number masked for security. More info below the fold vv

• Supports Multiple Resolutions
• Supports touchscreens (presumably single-touch?), hardware buttons, wheels and touchpads
• Does not support multitasking – car display will always show same current on-screen app as iPhone (which can be locked/asleep)
• Whitelisted to specific Apple apps – no public API for developers [yet?]
• Has no keyboard UI – voice recognition as input
• UI clearly subject to change
• Missing functionality in video is due to iOS Simulator not containing all the stock iOS apps

Troughton-Smith points out that he had shown the demo on iOS 7.0.3, and the leaked screenshots from last week suggests that Apple has redesigned the user interface in iOS 7.1.

According to previous reports, an iOS device will be use the car’s touchscreen system wirelessly via AirPlay, or over USB.

iOS in the Car will reportedly be fully available with iOS 7.1, and new cars from Honda, Mercedes, Nissan, Ferrari etc. are expected to support the feature by this year. Tim Cook had said that the feature will be an important part of Apple’s ecosystem.
