The verdict in the damages part of the legal battle between Apple and Samsung has been handed to Judge Lucy Koh. According to reports from the court room, the jury ruled in favor of Apple and ordered Samsung to pay an additional $290 million for infringing on multiple Apple patents.

The jury leaned heavily in Apple’s favor awarding $290 million of the $379 million that Apple requested. Samsung argued that it should only pay Apple an extra $52 million in damages. Besides the $290M awarded on Thursday, Samsung already owes Apple about $600 million in damages from the original trial. Unless an appeal changes these values, Samsung will end up paying Apple around $900 million in damages for its infringement.

This portion of the ongoing legal battle between the two technology companies was the result of an error in the original $1 billion that was awarded to Apple. Close scrutiny of the jury’s calculations revealed errors that necessitated this second trial. More than $400 million of the original award was miscalculated and vacated from the final damages amount. This figure was reduced to $290 million in the ruling issued today.

Update: Apple released an official statement to AllThingsD that is supportive of this ruling. Apple says, “For Apple, this case has always been about more than patents and money. It has been about innovation and the hard work that goes into inventing products that people love. While it’s impossible to put a price tag on those values, we are grateful to the jury for showing Samsung that copying has a cost.”
