iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 may feature 8-megapixel camera

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 will come with a significantly improved camera.

iPad 4 and iPad mini come with a 5-megapixel iSight camera, so it is possible that the new iPads could get an 8-megapixel camera.

It however remains to be seen if Apple will use the 8-megapixel camera used in the iPhone 5s or it will use the one used in iPhone 5c and iPhone 5. Apple has typically used the camera from the previous generation iPhone.

Kuo who has a good track record when it comes to predicting Apple product rumors writes:

We predict Apple (US) will launch new iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 (so called retina iPad mini) in 4Q13. As the tablet market becomes increasingly competitive, Apple could upgrade the camera as a selling point for the new iPad in a bid to increase competitiveness. We expect the upgrade will include 8MP rear camera, up from 5MP, and larger aperture. Lens module ASP will rise 10-20% on this optics spec upgrade.

If the new iPads come with the iPhone 5s’ 8-megapixel camera and the new A7 chip, then it will likely offer features such as Burst mode and slow-motion video.

The new iPads are unlikely to offer low-light capabilities as they do not come equipped with LED flash like the iPhone. Leaked iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 rear casing also indicate that Apple is unlikely to include Flash in the new iPads, which is a pity. iPhone 5s comes with dual-LED flash called True Tone flash for improved low-light capabilities.

I don’t really care about iPad’s camera specs, as I hardly use it to take photos. However, I’m seeing increasing number of people using the iPad or other tablets to take photos, so an 8-megapixel camera would be a welcome improvement for these users. I can’t understand why Apple does not include LED flash in the iPad. In my opinion, if there is a camera in a device it should by there by default.

Apple is expected to unveil iPad 5 and iPad mini at a media event later this month.
