Ever since Apple introduced iPhone 5s with the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, it has been hotly debated if the Touch ID fingerprint sensor would make its way to the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2, which are expected to be unveiled at the media event on Tuesday, October 22nd.
Couple of photos of the purported iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 with Touch ID have hit the web. However, folks at 9to5Mac have raised questions about the authenticity of the photos:
The first photo, depicting the iPad mini 2, shows what looks like a gold color option as well as the inclusion of the Touch ID sensor. Besides some color distortion, it appears that the bezel around the iPad may not even be hold, or it is a lighter shade than the color surrounding the Home button.
As an iPhone 5s owner, I really hope that the fingerprint sensor makes its way to the new iPads. It is so convenient to be able to unlock my device and authorize iTunes purchases with the press of my finger. I am already so used to it that I hate unlocking my iPad mini and iPad 4 with a passcode.
However, there has been growing skepticism about the possibility of the new iPads coming with Touch ID sensor for the following reasons:
- If the supply of sapphire and other materials for the fingerprint sensor is limited. If Apple can’t make enough Touch ID modules to meet the demand for the iPhone 5s, it is highly unlikely it will release another device with the same technology.
- It is also possible that Apple may want to keep the Touch ID as an exclusive feature for the iPhone 5s, it’s flagship phone.
