Apple adds more manufacturers to meet strong iPhone and iPad demand

Apple is reportedly adding new new manufacturers in Asia to ramp up production of the new iPhones and iPads, so as to meet the strong demand for these devices, especially with the upcoming holiday season.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple has added Wistron, a Taiwan-based company, as a manufacturer for the iPhone 5c. It has also added Compal Communications as an additional manufacturer for the iPad mini.

Wistorn will start manufacturing iPhone 5c units later this year, while Compal Communications will start production of the iPad mini next year.

Apple’s longtime partner Foxconn will reportedly focus on ramping up iPhone 5s production, whose supplies have been severely constrained since launch. But things between the two companies aren’t perfect, as Apple finds Foxconn’s labor violations a “headache” and is unhappy with the high return rates for the iPhone 5 due to defective units.
