On Tuesday, T-Mobile announced its earnings for the third quarter of 2013. The carrier added 648,000 net subscribers in the quarter and sold 5.6 million smartphones, which included sales through T-Mobile and its prepaid brand MetroPCS. Though it didn’t provide specific numbers, it’s is believed that the carrier sold about 540,000 iPhones in the quarter.
During its earnings conference call, T-Mobile Chief Marketing Officer Mike Sievert confirmed the iPhone accounted for 15% of the T-Mobile branded smartphone sales in the quarter. T-Mobile sold about 3.6 million smartphones under its own brand, says AllThingsD, which means the carrier moved abut 540,000 iPhone handsets in the quarter.
T-Mobile’s sales are significantly less than rivals AT&T, Sprint and Verizon Wireless. Though subscriber numbers play into these low figures, supply may also be a factor in the just ending quarter. Silvert noted in the earnings call that supply of the iPhone 5s at T-Mobile was short for the quarter. Even if supply were abundant, the carrier likely would not match the 3.9 million iPhones sold by Verizon and the 1.4 million iPhones sold by Sprint.
